New Blog Post: Palm Sunday 1984

On Palm Sunday 1984, I was confirmed. Wearing a suit bought at Sears in White Plains, NY (a store that is now closed), I stood before my pastor, Rev. F. William Wild, and confessed my faith before family, friends, and the members of St. John’s Evangelical…

"Greater meat production also has negative environmental effects. Livestock accounts for about 8 percent of global human water use (the proportion is a little higher in the U.S.)  Wheat takes about 1,000 to 2,000 cubic meters of water per ton of crop; rice takes approximately double that. Taking into account the water demands of feedstock, cattle take between 13,000 and 20,000 cubic meters per ton of beef (although chicken does considerably better at around 4,000 cubic meters per ton)."

Beer makers complain that the new rules, if adopted, would force them to dump millions of tons of spent grains, which are left over after barley, wheat and other grains are steeped in hot water.

"A faded fragment of papyrus known as the “Gospel of Jesus’s Wife,” which caused an uproar when unveiled by a Harvard Divinity School historian in 2012, has been tested by scientists who conclude in a journal published on Thursday that the ink and papyrus are very likely ancient, and not a modern forgery."
The test results do not prove that Jesus had a wife, only that the fragment of papyrus with the phrase, “Jesus said to them, ‘My wife,’” is likely not a forgery.

not really that big a deal.  gnostic manuscripts from this time frame are not new, meaning this falls into the debate on the already-debunked and long-discredited side of the conversation.

I don't really get why this is even making news.

"If (it spread as an airborne disease is) indeed true, then the Black Death wasn't a bubonic plague at all, but a pneumonic one."
A fascinating sidebar to the news that some of the skeletons dug up in London during excavation for a train line last year are indeed the remains of Black Death victims: The Observer zeroes in on a new theory as to how the disease spread, and according to researchers, we might want to stop pinning the blame on fleas.

Was he booed because of his policies or because HE THREW THE PITCH FROM THE FRONT OF THE MOUND!!
Mets fans would apparently like Bill de Blasio to stick to politics. The new mayor and famous Boston Red Sox fan was loudly booed at Citi Field today before throwing out the first pitch in the seas...

I didn't know what to expect when I walked in, but the restaurant was terrific. The food was outstanding. The service was quick - we were sitting for less than a minute before a server came and took drink orders. Overall, a very pleasant experience - will definitely be on the "must go back" list.

Anyone thinking that it is more than a diner will be disappointed. As a diner, it is terrific. I've never had a problem with the service; the staff always seemed attentive; and the food as been good. If you're looking for a four-star restaurant, you're out of luck. But if you are looking for a good diner with decent prices, then this place will pass muster.
