Google has announced that they plan to introduce a subscription service for YouTube fans. This paid-subscription service
will allow subscribers to watch YouTube videos in an ad-free environment.
They have not announced the dates nor the cost of the subscription service, but from the new YouTube Partner Program Terms, it could well be June 15, 2015
For YouTube fans
, this service gives them the option to watch videos on YouTube in an ad-free environment. And YouTube Partners get an opportunity to share in an additional revenue stream.
It is still early to determine how this is being received, but at first glance, there has been mixed reaction to this announcement from both camps. Many YouTube junkies already use programs (or add-ons like AdBlock) to block YouTube ads, so I'm not sure whether they will be willing to open their wallets to a monthly subscription.
For YouTube Partners
, ad-revenue share will change. Yes, they will get to share in this new subscription service, but as per the new Terms, the revenue share is 55%, as opposed to the current 68% (as far as I know).
It will be interesting to see how this shapes up until the details are finalized. Feel free to share your thoughts and comments. #YouTubePartnerProgram #YouTubeSubscriptionService
