We've been having DNA discussions in the virtual world of Second Life (just consult the "Genealogists In Second Life" page at Facebook for more details). Our next discussion will be on Sunday May 1, 2016. Here is a recap of o...

From my slide show at Second Life today. I tried to explain that testing close relatives improves the chances your matches are real. If you can test your 4 grandparents that would be ideal. If not test 2nd cousins to recreate the segments your parents passed from their parents, then down to you.

No, I don't think we do need to be scientists to work with our segment data. We don't have access to actual data to scientifically analyze our own results as far as coming up with IBD statistics anyway. We can look at populat...

Big changes at AncestryDNA and 23andMe. I would now recommend AncestryDNA over 23andMe.

My thoughts on this series. It's a New Zealand based show but the featured guests also had American ancestry.

We've been discussing endogamy in the ISOGG group. I took a poll at ISOGG a few weeks ago and learned that first cousin marriage was not uncommon in earlier times. This is true of certain groups. People living in isolated pla...

My Mom was taken by ambulance to Whittier Hospital Medical Center at 2 am on a Sunday. The staff working at that time didn't seem very knowledgeable about the problem my Mom had. The person who drew blood from her told me they were going to draw her blood every 2 hours. I asked why and she said they were monitoring it because of her heart condition. She doesn't have a heart condition, and that isn't why she was brought in. They did a lot of testing unrelated to the reason she was brought to the hospital. Her G tube came out and they should have been taking measures to preserve the site. She was there for about 7 hours and no measures were ever taken to keep the site from closing. I know of 3 people who have died at the ER at Whittier Hospital Medical Center. Their family members were all dissatisfied with the treatment they received. My Mom had been taken there before and at that time I was satisfied with the treatment. I'm asking she not be taken there again at this point. I'm afraid of that place after the strange treatment she received this last time. The hospital is seriously in need of remodeling. The ER needs upgrading. Very dingy looking ER. They seem to cater to the unwashed segment of society. The local Friendly Hills people don't seem to use the ER there.
