Wonderful posters on Australian Native Bees

Have you seen these beautiful native bee posters by Gina Cranson? They show key common species in accurate detail and make a great identification guide.

Posters are available for QLD and NSW and I believe a VIC one is also in preparation. Gina also sells lovely greeting cards and miniature prints featuring her bee paintings.

The Autumn Wild Pollinator Count is now underway!

It's time to get out with your clipboard and pen, and take a look at the insect pollinators in your garden. This Easter weekend is a perfect time to take part.

It only takes 10 minutes and you don't need any fancy gear or expert knowledge. Submit your observations online and contribute to Wild Pollinator conservation in Australia. Wild Pollinator Count runs until Sunday 16 April.

WildThings Program distributes hundreds of native hives

Congratulations to Peter Clarke with his thriving WildThings program in Ku-ring-gai Council in Sydney! He and his team have split and distributed hundreds of hives of native stingless bees to local homes in the area -- actually 500 hives at last count.

The program aims to create positive relationships between people and wildlife through education.

Leafcutter bee shares a nest burrow with a wolf spider!

Laurence Sanders has submitted an extraordinary series of photos to BowerBird website. They show an Australian leafcutter bee sharing the nest burrow of a wolf spider.

She returns to the burrow clutching a piece of leaf she has clipped out for her nest; she calmly slips into the burrow past the large wolf spider in residence; and busily builds her nest cells, stocking them with pollen and nectar for her young.

Is this behaviour really rare or has it just never been photographed before, wonders BowerBird creator Dr Ken Walker.

A superb new native bee book for Australia

Have you seen Dr Tim Heard's fabulous book about Australian native bees? It introduces our diverse solitary bee species, with spectacular colour photos, then presents a complete guide on how to keep our stingless native bees.

I was delighted to contribute information and photos about our Australian stingless bee species to this excellent book. It is a thoroughly researched and in-depth resource for anyone interested in our Australian native bees.

'The Australian Native Bee Book' is 264 pages long, with over 500 full colour photos and detailed diagrams. Aussie Bee highly recommends this new publication.

CSIRO tiny trackers help honeybees fight disease

"It's a tracking device weighing less than half a grain of rice, attached to thousands of bees in a single hive. Preserving Australia's healthy honeybees is the focus of CSIRO research rolling out in Canberra over the spring and summer."

Leafcutter Bees
"The amazing handiwork of the leafcutter bees makes them one of the most fascinating bees in Australia! The leafcutter bee snips a neat circle or oval from a leaf. She will use these leaf pieces to weave tiny cradles for her eggs inside her nest burrow."
