Mystery Readers
I'd LOVE to set up volunteers to read to kids in homeless shelters using Google Hangouts. I need to find someone at a state or national level to help me see what is possible. Anyone know anyone? THANKS :D

And now for a little good news!

My nonprofit will be given a grant by a local supermarket in the next few weeks. It's bittersweet, to be honest. My late husband applied for this unbeknownst to me, so it feels like a message to keep going. That's how I'm choosing to take it.

Any encouragement for this project, which aims to bring volunteer readers into classrooms via Hangouts/Skype, would be most welcome.

If there's no mark, start with asking Perhaps start with asking the place where you found it. If they don't know. Next try Creative Commons. The Disney way is to just use it, and if no one screams. it's okay to use. When you use something where ownership is unconcern, the safe thing is to not claim it. Give the attribution to the place where you found it. You asked... so I commented... cheers!

Reading to Homeless Children

Can we do this? I'd like to see a network of shelters (with computers or a smart phone) band together so that I can organize a volunteer to read to the kids for maybe 30 mins once a week.

Possible? How? Advice?

I'm getting a little grant soon (from the supermarket chain in this pic) and this is buying me the time to research this idea. I'm wondering, too, if I could post the addresses of the shelters in this Reading Without Borders program so that if anyone wanted to send real books they could.

What do you think?

Proud of my blond baby scientist :D

Anyone know of a company that might sponsor them at the MIT iGEM competition?

No need to go binary on the reading issue. As with most goals, there are many ways to get there. In my experience, making reading an isolating experience is a big turn-off for many kids/people. What if we had Mystery Readers visiting classroom via Hangouts? A volunteer reader and teacher choose a short passage which is then read to a classroom using Hangouts. The listeners ask strategic questions to discover where the reader is in the world and then the reading is discussed. 30 mins. If you have a classroom that might enjoy this and/or wish to be a Mystery Reader please sign up: www.ReadingWithoutBorders.org. Thanks :D
Parents and teachers work hard to instill a love of reading in young people. In fact, most consider that the love of reading is absolutely essential to a happy, successful, and fulfilling life. They are on an endless pursuit ...

Introduction
Grants from Google, The Dudley T. Dougherty Foundation, People's United Community Foundation, and the Frances R. Dewing Foundation have allowed my nonprofit, BIG FUN education, to create Big Fun PLAYS for K-12. Students listen to an audio play while following an illustrated script on screen. Related nonfiction pieces, acting exercises, and discussion prompts are embedded in the scripts. 40 academic words are targeted in each play and have clickable explanations. We motivate and scaffold students towards cross-curricular knowledge and bring the text exemplars in Appendix B of the CCSS to life. www.BigFunEducation.org We are currently adding a series of paperback books for schools that include the script from our free online plays and also include lots of writing, reading, thinking, and connecting activities.

I am currently seeking funding for a new project called Reading Without Borders. The idea is to get people knowledgeable about Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics to read to a child each week for 20 minutes using Google Hangouts or Skype. Soon, I'll collect would-be volunteers and teachers via a Google Form.

I started desktop publishing with a Mac in 1985. I created and sold a series of plays and related board games called Classic Theater for Children. After coverage in the New York Times  and the International Herald Tribune, we sold to all 50 states and 10 other countries. In 1991, I sold the company to Sundance Publishers. Recently, the rights reverted to me.

In 2009, I created an online motivational learning community for Connecticut. We had almost 70,000 paid subscribers and reliably raised test scores. 20% of our players stayed on our site for over an hour. 6% of our target demographic was enrolled. We gamified the work ethic and taught basic skills. People's United Community Foundation funded our initiative to reduce the loss of skills over the last two summers.
