MozCon 2014: Prove Your Value with Dana DiTomaso

Greetings fellow digital marketers! We are quickly moving through the final day of MozCon 2014, and are enjoying another phenomenal lineup of sessions. For those that couldn't make it this year, I'm providing a recap of each presentation which will cover insight and tips and tools from each speaker.

Presenter Bio

Whether at a conference, on the radio, or in a meeting, Dana DiTomaso likes to impart wisdom to help you turn a lot of marketing BS into real strategies to grow your business. After 10+ years, she's seen (almost) everything. It's true, Dana will meet with you and teach you the ways of the digital world, but she is also a fan of the random fact.  Kick Point often celebrates "Watershed Wednesday" because of Dana's diverse work and education background. In her spare time, Dana drinks tea and yells at the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

★ Reporting on last-click attribution in is like buying a football team and only paying the players who score.

★ Learn how to report so well that you never get fired - in theory. :)

Who has ever thought that client doesn't get it? Or..are we not explaining it well enough. We need to put our egos aside and look at the issue from the client's perspective.

How do you define great work?

➫ Sometimes what separates good clients from the "evil" clients are goals

➫ What is the one primary metric - define that will help you do work that matters. So...work with the client to set the goal and make it

➫ Set goals that work. It's the only thing that makes your work have value.

Goals vs. Attribution

Use SMART Goals
 - Specific
 - Measurable
 - Actionable
 - Realistic
 - Time based

Have realistic conversations. Sometimes you have to revise expectations based on the data.

You can measure (almost) everything

➫  Don't say the word conversions to clients - when you say it to a client they immediately think sales. Remember that there are micro and macro conversions.

➫ We don't have a data problem, we have a filter problem. We have to dial down the data to the essence or what's truly meaningful.

➫ Our job is to become indispensable through valuable reporting.

★ You don't become valuable by hoarding the data.  Smart reporting can make your client's jobs easier.

➫ Be honest - especially when things are going bad. Earn trust. It's not our job to make a client feel good about their bad decisions.

Can anyone read and understand your report?

➫  Can you hand your report to anyone and have them understand what's going on?

➫  You never want to report in a vacuum. Remove your ego > this is the metric, it relates back to the goal. Every client is a special snowflake and every report is custom to them.

➫  Have one page in a report that explains everything - something you could hand to the CEO.

★  Every report must be custom and reporting should never become a chore You have to treat reporting like it's the most awesome part of your job. This is your turn to shine

Google Analytics is making it easier to optimize for revenue with ROAS.

New metric now available in AdWords reports in GA: Return on Ad Spend (ROAS)

We're constantly exploring ways to make the metrics in Google Analytics more useful for your business. That's why we're introducing a new metric called Return on Ad Spend (or ROAS) to the AdWords reports in GA. The metric ROAS shows you how much revenue you bring in for each dollar spent with AdWords. For example: if you earn $7 for each $1 you spend on AdWords, your ROAS would be 700%.

ROAS is a powerful metric to optimize to, because it takes actual revenue into account; not just the number of conversions. In AdWords, you can even select a bid strategy to help you optimize to revenue: Target ROAS.

The new metric ROAS will replace the existing metrics Return on Investment (or ROI) and Margin in the AdWords reports in GA. You’ll find the AdWords reports in GA in the Acquisition section: Acquisition > AdWords; and then select “Clicks” on the Explorer tab to see the new ROAS metric. Note that you need to have Ecommerce enabled to see revenue data in GA.

More generally, the AdWords reports in GA can help you understand what happened after users clicked on your AdWords ad. Which pages did they visit? How much time did they spend on your site? Were they new or returning visitors? You can then use this information to optimize your AdWords campaigns.

One of the biggest upsides to having a metal desk is the magnetic factor. Here are a few things I've done to create more space.

Sci-fi worthy. That beak is from a 770-lb female squid. This is only the second giant squid scientists have ever laid hands on.

Her eyes were 14 inches in diameter and she had three hearts.

This nightmarish maw is the beak of a female colossal squid, one that weighed 770 lbs (350 kg), measured nearly 11.5 feet long ( 3.5 m) and was recently dissected by scientists during a live webcast from the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington, New Zealand. The squid was found by Captain John Bennett and his crew in Antarctic waters back in December 2013. She’s only the second intact colossal squid specimen ever recovered, providing an extraordinary opportunity for scientists to learn more about this mysterious species.

The squid’s eyes measured nearly 14 inches in diameter. The better to see you with, my dear. She also had three hearts, all the better to love you to tiny, bite-size pieces.

Hey everyone,

I wanted to give everyone a quick way to do your good deed for the day. This is about donating to charity, so if you're not into that sort of thing, stop reading now.

Step 1 - Find out if it's worth it
Visit amazon.com and go to Your Account
Click on Download Order Reports
Report Type: Orders and Shipments
Start Date: January 1, 2002
End Date: Use Today
Click Request Report

It'll take a second, but then you can download a CSV file which you can open in excel. Total up Column U (Total Charge), and that will give you what you've spent on Amazon in the last decade+.

I'll share my total if you share yours ;)

ANYWAY, now that you're convinced you spend too much money on amazon, decide to donate 0.5% of everything you spend to a charity of your choice. (There are about a million to choose from, I'm donating to the Caruthers Fair Association right now.)

Step 2 - Donate

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS CHOOSE A CHARITY AND SHOP AT SMILE.AMAZON.COM INSTEAD AMAZON.COM.

That's it, you guys.

I order something on Amazon probably once a week. Between that and Subscribe & Save, I'm getting very near to my dream of never having to leave the house ;)

Step 3 - For Pros Only
If you're a Chrome user, install the plugin called SmileAlways. Firefox users can use Smile Redirect. If you're like me, force of habit means you'll accidentally type in amazon.com from time to time.

Feel free to pass this along to anyone you like. Easy peasy.

A company I co-founded, Edit LLC, is hiring a PHP dev who's an OOP ninja and can think abstractly. We're paying a real salary, with benefits, offering a membership to The Hashtag (http://hashtagfresno.com), and it's interesting work. Know someone? Deadline is Sunday night! Interviews next week!
