➥ Robotics  -

Hey all - I'm working with a small team of roboticists from The Uni of Edinburgh to build a cheap but hackable little two-legged robot, Marty.
We've just launched on IndieGoGo, so if you're interested check us out, otherwise apologies for the promo.

Marty is RaspberryPi, Arduino, Mbed compatible, with i2c and serial interfaces, an on-board ARM M4 and ESP8266 so it'll be programable on it's own, or with an additional embedded device. We're planning on a load of interfaces: Scratch for kids and beginners, Python, C++, Arduino libraries and ROS for the serious folk (http://ros.org)

Feel free to ask questions :D
Meet Marty the Robot -the perfect robot for learning about robotics - a low cost walking robot that's more than a toy!

We've just launched a crowdfunding campaign for our little hackable two-legged robot, Marty.

It's got a ARM Cortex M4, WiFi (ESP-12E) and motor controller so works on it's own, but it'll also be Pi & Arduino compatible, with simple APIs for beginners and novices, as well as serious research-level integrations like ROS (http://ros.org). We're a small team from the University of Edinburgh's School of Informatics. Check us out if you're interested, apologies for the self-promo!

It'd be an interesting experiment to have one of these on the ISS flying around with reaction wheels and fans or something to move around.

A lot of your supposed 'digital natives' have a skill that I would call 'interface intuition' that is an automatic ability to recognise patterns in GUIs on phones, the web and the internet. I've never met a 'digital immigrant' that's had this innate ability to be able to immediately use applications without a bit of help.

I feel like this is an issue that's not going to go away - and besides, getting a search engine to unindex your content isn't deleting it, it's just making it harder to find - and anyone running their own index could theoretically rediscover the content. The current approach is bending a new medium and instantaneous recall system to be more like it's older, slower and less capable predecessor (namely paper, libraries and news archives etc.) Hopefully in the long run it won't be the search engines, bloggers, journalists or information holders that have to change, to forget, but rather society changing how it views historical information. The information we can get now within minutes isn't much more rich or complete than what we could have found with extensive time consuming research 20 years ago. People's judgement of historical data is too aggressive, and doesn't allow for any decay over time; ultimately I think it's learning to allow for that decay and fade into insignificance of old data that is what will hopefully supersede the need for deletion laws.
