I've been a big, but somewhat unsuccessful, advocate in getting children to go outside and hang out in nature. I went to a talk yesterday by Dr Scott the Paleontologist (+Scott Sampson
). It was a great presentation and show. Everyone there was totally enthusiasitc about getting children to experience nature. And it has me thinking...
Why is it so hard to get kids outside?
I sent Alex and Jen to Merrohawke Nature School last year while homeschooling Alex for Kindergarten. It was wonderful - they loved it and were always super at peace with the universe afterwards. I'm not taking them this year because it's a) a 45 minute drive away and b) I have had to send them both to school full time because of my health.
We have a gigantic forest 5 minutes drive from my house (Middlesex Fells). Last year one of the organisations (Friends of the Fells) had a highly successful and popular summer forest camp. Ever since I've been asking for an afterschool program based in the forest.
I'm (somehow) now on the Board of Directors for the Friends of the Fells. I guess I'm anxious to get an afterschool program going before my children will somehow age out of any program that starts.
I'm feeling a bit lost on how to make it happen...
