We create businesses to do something for our customers - usually because it's something we passionately believe in. The problem however, is that to get beyond the "creation" point - or beyond the start up mindset - is that once we've created it, we have to switch into money-making mode. The money is a way of telling us whether we've been successful reaching the right people with our products. If you're not closing sales - or enough sales - then it's either the products, the reach or the marketplace. Narrow it down.

You always hear me say, know your numbers. But what does that mean? It means that you know if your activities are successful. You know that you're selling products and services for more money than it cost you to make them, you know that you're saying the right thing to the right people and most of all you know how many of those people you have to talk to to close a sale.

Understanding business is objective. It's based on statistics - and yet we run it as if it was our firstborn. How many of us don't want to hear anything bad about what we're doing. And yet, numbers don't lie. When you watch those numbers, and know your statistics, it's just feedback on what needs tweaking. And that's a much better feeling than thinking that you're a screw-up.

Know your numbers.

At this time of year especially, I seem to be doing a lot of work with my clients around boundaries - or as we call them in business, systems and processes. Getting to the end of the year exhausted and hanging on by a thread is a signal that someone else has been running your business and your life - you are not in charge of you or your business. If you don't have a plan, this can happen. If you don't have a vision, this is the result. Time to change.

What's up with that? All the hard up front work to get to your goal and then what? "I didn't have time", "I wasn't organized" - whatever the reason/excuse - you dropped the ball. Wonder why your business is on a roller coaster? Inconsistent input = inconsistent outcomes.

There, I said it!

When it comes to business have a plan and follow the plan. And if you don't have a plan, or you do and you're not following it, then talk to me. I have programs to keep you on track (and you'll thank me for it).
