Hey John Spelich -- We agree that the Aliyun OS is not part of the Android ecosystem and you're under no requirement to be compatible.

However, the fact is, Aliyun uses the Android runtime, framework and tools.  And your app store contains Android apps (including pirated Google apps).  So there's really no disputing that Aliyun is based on the Android platform and takes advantage of all the hard work that's gone into that platform by the OHA.

So if you want to benefit from the Android ecosystem, then make the choice to be compatible.  Its easy, free, and we'll even help you out.  But if you don't want to be compatible, then don't expect help from OHA members that are all working to support and build a unified Android ecosystem.

How a rumor gets factualized: Cloudcar are a group of friends who I give free office space to in my incubator in Los Altos.  Revel Touch (Mar Hershenson's company: www.reveltouch.com) is another cool company that shares this space.  I'm not joining either one and I don't have any plans to leave Google.  See you on the 27th!

If I remember correctly you were also the inventor of, what now is, Google's Street View car.

I am a US Army veteran with severe optic nerve damage and chronic open angle glaucoma. I work and run a business and create ideas. If you ever read this I know you're busy with your robotics project but maybe you know other engineers who may want to work on a project to create a mobile device for the blind that assists with the dog and cane. This device should incorporate GPS technology and tell a blind person turn left at corner. Basically I want to see somebody invent something that before the blind person leaves home they can program their trip into the device and then when they leave out the door it will tell them turn left go 3 blocks restaurant is on the right. They will still have a cane and dog but this device will help them plan trip and with the GPS system be able to know exactly how to get there. It most be a mobile device with a earpiece that talks to them as they walk. IF you ever read this talk this over with some engineers and see what they think.

We were surprised to read Alibaba Group's chief strategy officer Zeng Ming's quote "We want to be the Android of China" when in fact the Aliyun OS incorporates the Android runtime and was apparently derived from Android.

Based on our analysis of the apps available at http://apps.aliyun.com, the platform tries to, but does not succeed in being compatible.

It's easy to be Android compatible, the OHA supplies all the tools and details on how to do it.  Check out this blog post that explains how we think about compatibility and how it relates to the ecosystem we worked hard to build:

Walking around Mobile World Congress and seeing the Android ecosystem at work is quite impressive. There are over 450,000 applications in Android Market. Some of the developers who built these apps are showing their latest and greatest in the Android stand. But the ecosystem doesn't sleep. Our partners have activated a total of 300 million Android phones! Currently they are activating over 850,000 phones and tablets per day.
