Admirable and important work that wouldn't be possible without statistics (and design). Good work, Jonathan!
I wrote this blog post a while ago but never published it partly out of fear for upsetting some of my colleagues. I try to be brave about such things, but I guess I just did not quite get up the poxy. Well, today something ...

The title is a perfect little Bowie lyric. An admirable space poet. Thanks as always to Karma for her thoughtfulness.

I enjoyed this commentary on instructional design and the people who practice it, especially at UC Davis.

I just heard Ilya Kaminsky read tonight at UC Davis, with Joe Wenderoth introducing him (while holding a baseball bat). With Kaminsky's manuscript in hand, I came home to watch him read again on YouTube, repeating those cadences and the varied pitch for eager ears. As a poet, he makes me wonder if I have been underperforming, so to speak.

I'm trying out adverbs today. I love optimistically posting something on Google+, and then seeing someone (such as you) like it or respond. For a moment we pretend happily that this platform has not failed abjectly, miserably, existentially.

I wonder if you can find me in this article in today's San Francisco Chronicle.
Remember that friendly, down-to-earth, modest person you went to high school with? [...] you go to your 10th reunion and discover that she/he has just spent six months orbiting the Earth on the International Space Station, or won a MacArthur Fellowship or is having a career retrospective at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Kate's latest blog entry, this one featuring our boy Truman.
In the days leading up to Christmas, Truman locked himself in his bedroom for hours, warning us not to enter, lest we spoil the holiday surprises he was creating for us. Although I wanted to sneak a peak, I stayed out of his ...

I found this article, and especially the video, to be helpful in how I think about storytelling.
I remembered my early beginnings and requested a change in the course name from "Creative Writing" to "Storytelling". People barely noticed the change, but I had a secret. I knew the importance of words.

The Varsity Theater is the classiest and most original theater in Davis. One finds there the best film choices, the tastiest popcorn, the most comfortable seating, and the highest quality projection equipment. I'm always pleased to keep more of my entertainment dollars here in Davis so the Varsity can focus on supporting local businesses, hiring Davisites and, on occasion, showing local films. My wife and I try to see everything showing at the Varsity, and we are almost never disappointed.

We have asked Megan to photograph our family many times, and have always been pleased with the results. She is creative, energetic with children, attentive to detail, and easy to work with. And her photographs are just beautiful -- you can see examples of her work framed in our dining room, and guests always remark positively on how Megan was able to capture our three kids. She also photographed my professional headshot, for which I am grateful. Top-notch work from our favorite photographer!
