Unexpected behaviour with potential for data loss:

I wanted to split names into first name and last name. I expected edge cases to be handled conservatively (either keep middle parts in last name - or at a push in first name). I know this is imperfect but it's 'good enough'.

However when You untick 'middle name' in your dialog box - data is discarded. I nearly didn't notice as it only affected a handful and no empty cells were visible.

Is this the best default? At the very least it needs a big warning.

Yeah they are bribing me with SMS credits for recommending this but the free service is pretty good (especially now Pingdom have decided to be tightwads)

Basecamp continues to thwart my efforts to make it usable

I thought I'd sussed a good workflow:

Set up ToDo lists that are clearly named at the start of a project so we can establish a good workflow with the client.

I had something like:

"Requested Tasks"
"Active Tasks"
"Completed Tasks"

with the intention that you drag ToDo items from one to another as you need to.

But no - too bloody easy. Of course that won't work.

Basecamp hides empty ToDo lists so the minute the last item is dragged out of one, it is no longer there to drag new items into. Thus confusing the client and spoiling my workflow.

And no setting to change this behaviour because 37signals doesn't believe in settings. (I partially concur in theory but usually end up hating it in real-life)

To my mind the solution would be making hiding a ToDo an explicit action. There's a tiny cost in user effort but it's conceptually simple and increases the flexibility of the system.

Grrrr.

I'm not a Winamp user any more but this should really happen.
