Gamification is a hot topic right now. Gartner even has it at the top of its hype cycle right now. But, what is it and has it taken off in the world of Knowledge Management? Wikipedia defines gamification as; the … Continue reading →

Hi all. I am looking to write an article that lists a number of definitions of gamification - from the gamification community at large. From this, I will see what the common themes are and try to offer a "best average" definition of gamification.

If you want to help, could you post your version here.  Make it as concise as possible, but make it your own!

For example, mine is "The use of game elements and design metaphors to solve problems"

Thanks

the application of game mechanics in human centric problem resolution

I think the key is human centric, I.e. using game mechanics to solve a logical problem such as a computer programming one won't help. as soon as you introduce the human facing element it becomes far more applicable

It is indeed. It is part of selling their new book. The trouble is, in this case, they are just plain wrong. The people who read gartner are the people who will be forming the decisions over large companies strategies around gamification and will now think not is all about points and badges and technology. When they are challenged they can now say "but that's what gartner says". Arg.

+Andrzej Marczewski I find myself in the position of gamifying a Spanish learning course for kids (www.speekee.com). This is a whole new area for me and advice like yours is gold. I am happy with progress, slow though it may be. ¡Gracias Andrzej!

We define Gamification as mechanisms that moves middle adopters on Roger's curve to adopt faster, where
- for adoption we include behaviors that show that one has adopted to changes such as using new products, following new work process, and new initiatives, using new technology, acquiring new skills
- the reward is intrinsic learning.

All the excitement with Gartner got me thinking about my own definitions and helped solidify a few thoughts :)
Gamification is the use of game elements and design metaphors to solve problems

Had to laugh. Gartner have redefined gamification as

“the use of game mechanics and experience design to digitally engage and motivate people to achieve their goals” http://blogs.gartner.com/brian_burke/2014/04/04/gartner-redefines-gamification/

I laughed, not because of the fact they redefined it but because In 2012 I started using two variations

"The application of game mechanics to non game tasks to improve motivation, promote engagement or to drive desired behaviours." http://www.slideshare.net/daverage/gamification-and-stuff

And

"the application of gaming metaphors to real life tasks to influence behaviour, improve motivation and enhance engagement." http://www.capgemini.com/blog/capping-it-off/2012/03/gamification-for-your-company

I wonder. Was I ahead if the curve?

Must admit. I don't agree with the word "digitally". Gamification does not revolve around technology!

digital is enabler to specific problems that gamification might be applied to but it is not a defining factor, gamification is used in many non digital fields without people even knowing what it is

A look at points and badges and how they can apply to #gamification in small and planned ways.

Introduction

I’m a web designer by trade since 2000, now working as the Intranet Webmaster at Capgemini UK. Whilst I have achieved a high level of expertise in this, these days my areas of interest and passion revolve around the exciting worlds of Gamification, Social Media, Technology and Video Games.

I am amazed every day by how much is happening in these fields and enjoy feeling part of this. I blog on a weekly basis about Gamification, social media and other side topics. I write about video games on my games review website (Yet Another Review Site running since 2006) and in 2012 I also self published a short eBook on gamification –Gamification: A Simple Introduction.
