Sprint to make all of its devices domestically unlockable in 2015

First up, the good news. Sprint has revealed in its official unlocking policy that, as part of its participation in the CTIA’s Consumer Code for Wireless Service, it plans to make all of its devices — including prepaid models — capable of being domestically unlocked. The not-so-good news? Well, this policy will only apply to devices released on or after Feb. 11, 2015.

While some devices released recently have come unlocked out of the box, that’s not a feature that every phone or tablet currently supports. Thankfully, Sprint plans to change that next year, allowing consumers to unlock their device for use on another U.S. carrier so long as it has the proper wireless band support. It’s just a bummer that you Now Network folk will have to wait nearly a year before you’ll be able to buy a device that you know will be unlockable out of the box. At least we know the feature is coming, right?

Google Glass XE16.1 update arriving now!

This latest will bring Glass up to XE16.1, and naturally, we suspect this is nothing more than a bug fixer. Common complaints that came with the XE16 update were sluggishness, a frequent need to reboot, the quality of voice recognition and battery life. We cannot say we were experiencing all of those issues ourselves, but we do hope this point release update takes care of the problems.

If you really wanted a Galaxy S5 but aren't looking to renew your carriers contract Ting is offering it up for pre-order under $600.  Still expensive but off contract its the cheapest we've seen yet.

Keep in mind that Ting devices would be the CDMA versions since they use the same network as Sprint and orders today will not ship until May 5th.

Sony rolls out updates to SmartWatch 2 platform

One of the biggest new features Sony incorporated into their new update is customizable watch faces. These can be configured on the device itself or via a users smartphone. Users can drag and drop a variety of widgets onto the face of the smartwatch to get the information they are interested in. Some of the existing widgets include items like the date, weather info, notifications, a battery indicator, and an alarm. Sony has opened up the platform to third-party developers, so new widgets can continue to hit the market. Along with the widgets, Sony has also introduced six new wallpapers for the SmartWatch 2.

Samsung's first Tizen phones launching in Q2 2014

Samsung's first Tizen powered smartphones are set to hit the market in Q2 of this year according to a report by Reuters. Yoon Han-kil, senior vice president of Samsung's product strategy team, said that the first phone to launch around the end of the second quarter will be a high end model, with the next a more mid-range effort. He also said that "Android still needs to be our main business."

Samsung has previously tried to launch Tizen smartphones through Orange and NTT Docomo but failed due to "poor market conditions." Seemingly the timing is now better, and would follow Samsung's Tizen powered wearables, the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo to market.
