Hume Castle in Berkeley for sale
While I'm personally not a fan of living in such a large house (5,750 sq.ft.), and will not be making an offer, it might be just right for you. The builders of the house in 1929 where Samuel and Portia Belle Hume. Samuel's father was James Hume, special detective to the Wells Fargo Co., who famously brought outlaw stage coach robber "Black Bart" to justice. *
Samuel Hume attended Berkeley High School, graduating in 1904, and then the UC Berkeley, where he played leading roles in student drama productions and received a bachelor's degree in architecture in 1908. In 1927 in Paris he met and married Portia Bell, a fellow Berkeley graduate who was studying sculpture with Antoine Boudelle. This was a second marriage for both. After returning to Berkeley, *the couple hired John Hudson Thomas to design a home in the Berkeley hills modeled after a medieval French cloister.
The present owners have lived there for 30 years and thought it's time to scale back. They are asking 5 million USD, which considering how expensive homes are in The Bay Area, seems a fair price for such a home. Be sure to check out the views of the bay, and the cloister, at the link.
