These are pictures of where I used to live and where many of the people I care most about still do.

Israeli operation "Brother's Keeper," which ostensibly began to recover three Israeli teenagers reportedly kidnapped last week, has expanded into massive assault on every major Palestinian city. It is hard, given the operation's breadth and indiscriminate destructiveness, to understand it as anything other than collective punishment. Danny Danon, Israel’s Deputy Defense Minister, told Radio Darom, “In my opinion there is room for extensive actions against the civilian population.” He suggested that Israel “shut off the electricity in the West Bank and Gaza.” Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon has declared: “Even if we locate and rescue the kidnapped boys, we won’t cease this operation until we feel we have exhausted it.” What does it mean to "exhaust it"?

The Israelis have arrested 370 people, whom they are holding without charge, and killed five Palestinians, one of whom was only 14.* Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has declined to condemn or apologize for any of those killings.

*Some sources report that he was 13 while others report 15. His name was Mahmoud Jihad Muhammad Dudeen.
