There’s little doubt that the field of SEO is rapidly changing. 6-8 years ago, SEO was simple: get as many links to your site, put your keywords in title, and wait for Google to rank you. Now, tactics like guest blog posting will land you in Google purgatory. But it’s not just the rules of SEO that’s changing: the way people are consuming media is as well. Over the past few weeks, while looking into how the Knowledge Graph pulls data for certain sources, I have made a few general observations and have been tracking what, if any, impact certain practices have on the display of information panels. This post is what I've learnt thus far.
At Pubcon Las Vegas I was a part of the Algo Proofing panel, and I took the opportunity to lay out my thoughts on the impact of all the various algorithm changes and new products from Google.
In addition, I dig into what it means for publishers. In short, Google is systematically killing of tactical SEO, and forcing people to get better and better at thinking strategically.
