It would be nice if Google made a bit more effort keeping the sparse Business Guidelines up to date.

https://support.google.com/places/answer/148047?hl=en

This has not been true for a few months now:
(although you can always enter your own category if Google Places doesn't suggest one that fits your business).

And advise offered on the Google and Your Business help forum has not percolated through here either:
Also it needs to point out you need to add more specific product or service offered details in the description and across the web. Perhaps a mention that Google assess the Semantic meaning of your web content.

After a 'rest' the ability to respond to Reviews is again being rolled out for the new Places Edit screen, in the + Pages Edit screen style.

Google will only remove a Review with serious abuse in it. I had one review removed which was an obvious remark from a user in the Google and Your Business forum.

As part of the new process Reviews in Google search can only be left from a + Profile now. If its a real Profile for a person then there is some chance of resolving an issue in the real world.

However there is no Post Card verification for + Profiles, while there is now for your own Places entry. Personally I think that, similar to Schema.org, the search engines should get together and move to users having to provide a Social Security Number and businesses their Tax Reference Id in order to add a check mark on their entry. Only such registered entries should be able to leave reviews.

I have recently had an old anonymous and empty 3* review pop up which Google will not remove. And which I can make no sensible response to. I have asked in the Forum for the + Profile to be added in if the user is in my email account, and so a possible customer, so that I can respond. Or be deleted if its not for me.

https://plus.google.com/+AndrewHuskinson/about?hl=en&gl=uk

Just another side of the problems users have with Reviews.

Reading the MOZ survey top tips.

It still seems best to have your primary Category in the real Business Name.  If you re-brand do it properly:
Real world
Web Directories
Website and Blog
Let Google fond your new name and change the Google+ search result.
Either they will email you and change the Places name or you can do it when the search Google+ page shows the new Business Name.

NAP, business name, address and primary phone no consistency across the internet.  Spell out your address in full, Google may abbreviate in search. Check your address by navigating by town, street then house no to your location in Maps without using the business name. If there is no Address entry for you location in Map Maker add one and position the red pin in your boundary to get a good Streetview picture. Make sure if a retail or service desk location open to the public that a store front image is visible in Streetview or add one with location markup to Places and your website and blog. You can add freephone nos as secondary nos on Places, website and blog. I would avoid them in their party entries as a primary no.  Also avoid yellow pages type tracking nos like the plague and if you have any get them physically deleted.

Try to get good citations, major listings, business area and if Local then any nearby BBB or local paper directories.

Use your + Profile for networking if a business owner or name principal. Make a weekly Post to a + Brand or + Local Business page to engage with your customers. A Page is a good place to make offers or have promotional events for customers. Posts are as valuable as hard to retain reviews to show positive customer engagement.

Be subtle with reviews.  Where customers found you is the best place for them to leave reviews.  Simple English with one mention of your Christian name and a Category. Where they are new to Google Plus you can guide them on their own internet connected device to make a + Profile and make a few local reviews of eateries say before leaving a review for you later on. Only garner a trickle of reviews consistent for your business Category.

Be active on relevant Google Communities making Posts of interest, shares with pertinent comments, + 1 posts and Comments.  The aim is to engage and get +ed as a topic expert.

Good luck with Google in the next year.

Cheers. Andrew.

Hi,

My Ebook business partner, Martin Russel of Word of Mouth Marketing, has suggested the book needs updating now that Google are rolling out functionally linked + Local Business pages for Places entries. So I have made a new Blog post about the first field we need to set up in a Places entry. The Business Name.

I will be posting about the Places entry, its Maps address, the + Local Business page and Google+ Profiles and Pages. Also website and Blog advice with SEO implications.

Feedback of your experiences and individual problems which I am happy to help with will be appreciated. And I will be offering 10 free new Ebooks for the most helpful engagers in this process.

In the interim I will upgrade the 15 minutes consulting time to 30 minutes in order to address Google+ issues you may have as well.

Cheers. Andrew.

There seem to be problems editing new Places entries with the new functionally linked + Local Business page.

One problem may be having had Custom Categories in the Places entry which Google have now deprecated.

Try to edit from the Places entry rather than the + Local Business page.

As a precaution I would go into your Places entry, delete the Categories and re-type them only selecting ones from Googles drop down list.

Mike Blumenthal has a tool for checking out available categories which may help better than Googles own drop down options which depend on a simple character by character match.

Hi,

Google have made a new search algorithm release called Hummingbird.

This is moving more towards a Semantic view of search. Where meaningful content is more important.

It is even more reason to review your Places entry and + Local Business page content for correct data.

Also Google are rolling out upgrading Places entries and functionally linked + Local Business pages. Even if you have a + Local Business page, not verified for service area business, Google will create a new functionally linked page.

So if you see two + Local Business pages in your + Profile DO NOT delete the new empty one as it will Delete your Places entry as well.

To help you I have a good value Places entry and + Local Business page review for £45. If you make this small payment through my Paypal button on my Google Website and then email me your details I can advise you of content changes or make them for you:

You can email through my Profile and I will get back to you.

I am trying to add a +Page to CircleCount now, not my + Profile.

I want to get statistics about my page at +CircleCount (www.circlecount.com) with this key:

At the moment a new Places Edit page is rolling out for new Places entries.

Included in it is an option to create a matching +Local Business page as part of the process.

This is the first opportunity Service Area Businesses (SAB) have had to make or merge a + Local Business page with a hidden address Places entry.  Note due to the 'horrible experience' SABs have had in the past year many still show their address whilst unlucky ones have been penalised for a quiet change to the Business Guidelines.

So if you have recent made a Places entry its advised to wait till this option appears in the new Edit page rather than manually add a +Local Business and verify/merge it with the Places entry.

We have branches all over Australia and had numerous problems with Google places from listings being rejected by Google, taking weeks to list and a multitude of other problems. We then contacted Andrew after seeing his contribution to solving problems on the Google Places support forum. He fixed all our problems quickly which significantly increased internet traffic to our branches. His service is impressive and is highly recommended.Thank you once again.
