New post on my blog about taking the time to learn why things work in web development... Note to Self — Stop Taking Shortcuts
In programming, and life for that matter, shortcuts seem great. They often provide quick and easy solutions, but they lack substance, and generally make things worse in the long run. It's so easy as a developer to reach for low hanging fruit. You can usually find code that's close enough to what you are trying to accomplish and simply copy and paste your way through until things just work, but we're not learning that way. We're doing ourselves a ...

I'm starting to blog again! My first post explains why I don't design in the browser first. Don’t get me wrong, conceptually it makes a ton of sense. Just jump right into an environment that understands responsive design, hover states, and animations, but the problem (at least for me) is that it’s stifling my creativity.
You’ve heard that starting your designs in the browser is the way to go. So have I. It’s what all the cool kids are doing, but it’s not for me, and it may not be for you either.

SASS is pretty great! It's become so integrated into my workflow that it's easy to underestimate how much I rely on it. I've had the woeful experience of revisiting some of my older projects that used vanilla CSS, and it's a bit like going back to a page layout rocking tables. It just doesn't feel right, and you quickly realize how much time and headaches you've saved by using SASS on your newer projects.

With that said, I thought I'd showcase a handful of mixins that I use on nearly every project. Nothing earth shattering here, but I find them useful, hopefully you will too.

Conceptually I like the idea of mobile first responsive design, but I find it much easier to design responsive sites with a graceful degradation approach.

i have to admit...i bought Words With Friends so I didn't have to see the ads, etc. But...I really do play the game just about every day so it was a good purchase for just $.99 cents back then...i think it's $2 now.

I never knew I could create a custom unicode-range using font-face rules. Very interesting! http://24ways.org/2011/unicode-range

The parallax scrolling effects of this site blow my mind! http://www.smartusa.com/
Great things have been done by flying in the face of convention, by doing the precise opposite of what is expected or normal. Maybe it's time to undo. Unclutter. Uncrowd. Uncomplicate. Unbig. Uncar.

Story
Tagline
Web developer/designer fueled by curiosity, driven by problem solving. Christian, husband and father of 4.
Introduction
I love the process of creating a website! I’m a problem solver. I strive to craft an awesome user experience. I do it all with a fine mix of CSS3, HTML5 & jQuery, with a pinch of Silverstripe or Wordpress... to taste of course. It's a privilege to be able to make a living doing something that I genuinely enjoy.
