Like most municipalities in Michigan and nationwide, the Bay City Commission is a nonpartisan elected body that is supposed to represent the city's residents and not political interests. But when political affiliations of a commission are so obvious, it shines light on the questions: Should nonpartisan City Commissioners advertise their partisan beliefs? And should the Bay City Commission become a partisan body?

It was a perfect day for killing mosquitos.
Springtime mosquito control services kicked off this week in Bay County, with plans to treat 40,000 acres of flooded woodland over the next week through the air.

Perhaps not the most creative street name, but Rosalie Brondstetter, perhaps Bay City's first female welder, will be honored at the development.
Following a Facebook contest, Bay City's newest waterfront street at the Uptown Bay City development officially has a name: Uptown Drive.

Fight against blight: Bay City leaders look to tackle 80+ buildings on dangerous buildings list.
Bay City soon will begin knocking down 14 blighted properties with money from a state grant. That only scratches the surface, however, of the city's blight issue. Armed with a list of more than 80 "dangerous" properties, various groups and individuals in the city have big ideas on how to deal with the situation going forward.

Sure to be a talker. Should this business have to pay its $18,000 adjusted water bill, after the city made a clerical error and didn't bill the full amount for 16 months?
An ongoing clerical error by the Bay City accounts receivable office that lasted nearly a year and a half has resulted in an East Side business receiving an unexpected — and rather high — water bill that city officials say needs to be paid.

40-year-old mural discovered on historic Dunlop Motor Co. building in downtown #BayCity.
The original plan was to remove a portion of the metal siding to install some windows at the historic Dunlop Motor Co. building in downtown Bay City. But a discovery of 40-year-old paint has brothers Terry and Lee Spencer thinking otherwise.

A #BayCity  snowplow ran a red light and crashed into an SUV, but wasn't cited for a traffic violation. Find out why:

Introduction
Hi — I'm Andrew Dodson, a journalist that has had too many jobs in the past four years. I started my journalism career with MLive.com and the Bay City Times where I covered everything from education to business to city and government news. After getting engaged to my lovely wife of more than two years, we made the decision to move to Colorado. That's where the fun began.

Scouring for jobs, I ended up working in a multimillion dollar mansion on top of a mountain for some kind of sketchy website (I'm still not sure what they do...), a luxury travel club based in downtown Denver, a plethora of clients as a full-time freelance writer and for RE/MAX, at the company's headquarters in Denver. Throughout 2013, I worked as the technology editor for TVNewsCheck, a great trade publication that covers the TV broadcasting industry. I loved writing for TVNewsCheck and learned a lot about an industry I knew little to nothing about, but I continued to miss community journalism. There's nothing better than telling a story that's read by the community you live in.

So, fast forward to today. Starting in January 2014, I'll be back in Michigan with MLive.com and the Bay City Times where I'll be covering city hall and picking up some editing duties. I'm excited to be back in community journalism and can't wait to start breaking stories.

Cheers to big things in 2014!
