Happy birthday, Fortran! You look just like you did 61 years ago.

Europhobia in Switzerland.

Got this leaflet in my mailbox recently. It's full of fear mongering, alleging that the EU wanted to subvert the Swiss legislative and judiciary. I wonder how Switzerland would be doing economically if it wasn't so well connected with the EU.

AlphaGo Zero is the strongest version of AlphaGo ever, and it was trained entirely without expert knowledge.

When AlphaGo beat Lee Sedol and Ke Jie, it was using a Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) algorithm combined with neural networks to decide on the moves. The neural networks were initially trained using recorded games of human masters. Zero now was trained entirely against itself, getting stronger with each iteration. On the go (no pun intended) it picked up traditional strategies, but also non-standard strategies, unbeknown to humans.

This last bit is striking me, as it hints at something bigger: that computers might gain insights that are (yet) beyond us.

I don't have a use case for this as the world seems to speak Low Gothic (i.e. Engish), but still: watching this gives me a Star Trek moment. Awesome product, built by awesome teams.

Badabumm.

Huh, I was aware that my boarding passes encode a lot of private information. I wasn't aware that this is so poorly protected that you basically have to consider it public to anyone who gets a hold of your discarded passes or sees a photo that you've snapped of them. One more reason to not use paper boarding passes, but have everything on your phone.

In case you're as tired as I am from reading claims from semiconductor manufacturers to be on par with Intel: here's the data, and no they're not.
