The water that we swim in in summer is icy cold now, but the promenade along river Danube is a nice place to be on a sunny day, even in winter. The Song of the Day is “Cold Water” by Tom Waits. Hear it on YouTube. Posted by andreas at 8:00 pm Tagged with: Alte Donau, Austria, Danube, ...

I like that church. The artist obviously didn't care about architectural conventions at all and the building looks refreshingly different from everything I've ever seen. On a less sunny day I would probably have opted for B&W, but here the contrast of blue sky and warmly colored concrete works ...

Herbert is dead. You didn't know him, I hardly did. He was the requirements manager who wrote the requirements document for the program that I currently build, alongside a group of other programmers. As requirement docs go, it's not bad at all, but like all requirement docs it is universally ...

When I was in that pilgrim church in Gallizien, I went up to the gallery to take an image down into the nave. Contrasts were so extreme and I was too lazy to bracket exposure, thus the images from inside are nothing to be shown. Instead here's the peculiar staircase down from the gallery.

Same place as yesterday, this is a big shrine opposite of the church, along the wall of the graveyard. It's open on three sides and I can only assume that it was used by pilgrims when the regular church was too small. The Song of the Day is “Shrine” by The Cave Singers. Hear it on YouTube.

OK, I've got to wring out one more image of that last walk to work before I went down with the flu. I had thought of this image as a secure bank, but it only began to work when I turned it into B&W. The Song of the Day is “Shadows On The Street” by Traverdan. Hear it on YouTube.

This is the last image of the series. I have a few more, but, you get the idea :). The Song of the Day is one last time “Everything Is Broken”, interpreted by Bettye LaVette. Hear it on YouTube. Posted by andreas at 8:00 pm Tagged with: Architecture, Austria, Church, Olympus OM-D E-M1, Vienna, ...

Chris Klug's photography blog “Patterns of Light n' Dark” is gone. I have no idea what happened, but where his blog was, there's now a single post by soeme game designer reporting about his “Return from Interstellar Space“. Last time something like that happened, I found out Bill Birtch was dead ...

Outside of the graveyard walls there are two marble plates with gilded inscriptions, listing the names of those unfortunate citizens fallen in the two big wars of the last century. Heroes they are called, fallen in defense of their country. Which is mostly wrong.

I have no idea how old the pavement in front of yesterday's shrine is. The stones look old and worn, but really, there's rarely a stone that doesn't look old, does it? Still, I like to imagine nailed leather boots on the feet of pilgrims, who stood there, listening to a latin sermon, ...

Gallizien is the place. It's a small village in Carinthia with a church devoted to St. Jakob, or as the say in Spain, Santiago. This small village was on one of the countless pilgrim routes to Santiago de Compostella, in medieval times a pilgrim destination second only to Rome.

This dog is a reminder that leaving dog droppings around is a supposedly costly thing. Well, actually it ain't, but people seem to need the friendly reminder. At least the campaign with these tens of thousands of cardboard dogs has changed Vienna from a place where you needed to mind every step ...
