SEND +John Herman TO SPACE
I have a very unique request. I might go to space. Yes, really.
This is not science fiction. I have a very real opportunity to go to space, but I need help. Read on... or jump to how you can help.
I was chosen as one of the 20 semi-finalists (50,000 initial entries cut down to 1000 cut down to 20) to move into the public voting phase of the nationwide Space Race 2012 contest. The Seattle Space Needle is partnering with commercial spaceflight company Space Adventures to make the trip possible. Space Adventures has already sent seven people to space on privately funded trips. Buzz Aldrin, the second man to set foot on the moon, has also thrown his support behind the contest, saying, "This new space race is important to our country in as much the same way as the one that I was a part of 50 years ago," he said. "Today we're embarking on a journey that will carry hundreds of thousands of people like you and me into space." Here's some local media coverage from a few hours ago: http://www.seacoastonline.com/articles/20120222-NEWS-120229926
HOW YOU CAN HELP: My contest video has gone live on the Seattle Space Needle's Facebook page and voting has begun. I ask you to please take a moment and vote... daily. Viewers will be allowed to vote a maximum of once per day through March 18th. After public voting has ended, five finalists will compete in challenges in Seattle. The grand prize winner goes to space. Here's the link to vote: http://apps.facebook.com/spaceracecompetition/entries/134
(Yes, it is a Facebook app. Yes, I know. I know this is a lot to ask. Remember this is space. SPACE. For the bigger picture, go to the Seattle Space Needle's Facebook page.
If you want to go the extra mile and help spread the word to others, then here's a link that sums everything up: http://www.johnherman.org/2012/02/21/send-john-herman-to-spaceFun fact:
Public voting ends on March 18th, halfway through the run of charity plays I am producing (See: http://boingboing.net/2012/02/20/science-fiction-apocalypses-li.html
), and the very the day I shave my head to raise money for children's cancer research grants. Here's a link to that as well: http://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/mypage/522482/2012
Let's just say that March is a wild month for me.
Hey +Natalie Villalobos +Katherine Gramann +Chris Brogan +Steve Garfield +Cam Meadows
& other Google+ fans, supporters, and employees, I would absolutely love to drop in on a hangout from space. For real. I obviously have no control over this, but a boy can dream.
