How to use gratitude to be a better leader

SOMETIMES WE HAVE BAD DAYS. BAD WEEKS. BAD QUARTERS.
Maybe 2013 hasn’t been that great for you. Or maybe it's been terrific, your business is way up; but now you are feeling overwhelmed...

Either way, you could find something to kvetch over, something to complain about, couldn’t you? But listen. When things get tough, we need to be thankful! That's right, I said thankful! Being thankful, even when we face adversity, keeps us open to learning more from each situation. Gratitude helps to ease the pain of difficult circumstances, and it makes us better at accepting the help we need.

We can't afford to be negative. We can't afford to be "busy", overtired or isolated. We need to jump into the muck and the mire and find something to be grateful for to help us get to the other side. I’m not talking about faking it 'til you make it (although that has its place). I’m talking about finding something real and tangible to be grateful for, and then being grateful for it!

When you think about it, it isn’t hard. The truth is, we have so much to be thankful for. 

So let me ask you, how did you respond the last time someone asked, “How are you?” Did you start with a complaint? A problem? Or a positive qualified by a negative – “I’m okay, today, but yesterday…?

The perspective that thankfulness brings will help us to provided the leadership our team needs. We need thankfulness for ourselves (it has a lot of health benefits). If any of this is resonating with you, I encourage you to read on:

THE BUSINESS OWNER'S ROLE IN CREATING AN ENGAGED TEAM

You've probably heard a lot lately about this idea of employee engagement. There are some scary statistics being thrown around; two-thirds of workers are less than fully engaged in their jobs (Aon Hewitt, 2013) with 18% "actively disengaged" (Gallup, 2013). You may want to say, "Not in my company." Maybe it's not two-thirds, but I'm confident that there are people in your organization who have more to give, who are surfing, or loafing, or even actively working on outside projects, when they should be producing value for your firm.
