Another great piece from the Breaking Smart newsletter, this one talking about what people management is really about nowadays.

I am grateful that someone is publicly calling BS on the weird Silicon Valley stance that employees should buy into a company mission as if it was a cult and stay loyal to it no matter what (where "loyalty" is taking to mean "stay at your job even if the company is going under or your management has no idea what are they doing").

Nice piece by Steven Levy on his experience training as a Google Self-Driving Car safety driver, with lots of pics of the cars and the testing facility.

Not driving the Google car changed the way I drive real cars. Hopping into my rental car the next day, I was hyperaware of every potential complication and threat. I found myself mentally constructing an x_view of the conditions around me, gauging where dangers lay.

[...] research shows that a real commitment to meritocracy requires understanding that America hasn’t gotten there—at least not yet. It is this insight that leads to the adoption of practices that will ultimately result in a society where merit truly does equal ability + effort.

(News at eleven.)
Managers who believe themselves to be fair and objective judges of ability often overlook women and minorities who are deserving of job offers and pay increases.

A surprisingly in-depth, for BuzzFeed, piece about the trajectory of Good Eggs. I find it rather fair, although perhaps a little bit too on the pessimistic side. TL;DR Making a business work is hard.

20th person killed by Caltrain this year. That's about 1 person killed every 2.35 weeks.
The Caltrain death marked the agency's 20th fatality of the year, matching a record-high set back in 1995.

+David C. Navas from what I hear it is not new, either. Someone I know who is in their late 20s and went to Paly mentioned once in passing to me "i thought suicides in high school were normal".  :-(
