Don't let this happen to +james dupree
James Dupree is a world-renowned artist and native son of Philadelphia, who is about to see his art studio turned into a grocery store, thanks to the rubber-stamp review that passes for judging when his city exercises the power of eminent domain....

A good question. And though +Jonah Peretti and +Danny Sullivan chortled about it, Peretti was clear that he was saying it doesn't work for Buzzfeed. I think it's also clear that all the recent changes with G+ show that Google is shifting how it's used (especially with Gundotra gone now).

Anyway, +Paula Allen's piece is well-done, and points out the benefits of G+, which were definitely discussed in different parts of the conference. Though not nearly as much as last year or the year before, I'd note.

What Content Goes Hot on Google+?

In response to +Jonah Peretti's comments in the #SMX  Keynote Conversation with +Danny Sullivan, our +Paula Allen opened the discussion to come up with an answer: http://www.bruceclay.com/blog/what-content-goes-hot-on-google/

+BuzzFeed hasn't discovered what really works on Google+, so they don't invest in it as a traffic driver. What about you?

Even if you aren't expecting the 1000s of reshares BuzzFeed does, you want a return for your effort. So Peretti's question remains: What is the "core energy" of this network? What types of content are people really hungry for on Google+?

Tagging people mentioned in the post or who we think are integral to this discussion:

The #icebucketchallenge  isn't for everyone. I say you shouldn't feel obligated to participate - and that doesn't mean anything bad about you. Your thoughts?
Just because everyone else is doing it, does it mean you have to, when challenged? Spoiler alert: No, it doesn't.

+Amy Vernon We used to do the ice bucket thing 20 years ago on the last night a cook worked in my kitchens when I was a Sioux chef. 5 of us would catch you at the end of the night with 5 gallon pickle buckets full of ice and salt.

It was an honor for you to get ice bucketed by us, you didn't get it if we did not like you. And five guys with 20 gallons of below freezing water would stop you in your tracks and take your breath away.

Today's ice buckets are meant to do that, make you do something you don't want to do that actually physically hurts when you do it like we do.

But that only works between real friends, it's supposed to hurt, it is supposed to be something you don't want to do, and we are supposed to enjoy forcing you to do it.

But I can guess about now that you don't like being the victim of a practical joke either? Margie hates em too. I on the other hand am the king of practical jokes, I love the whole thing, and yes getting me back in my restaurant days was hard to do, but both the joker and myself loved the whole thing.

Great post from +Doug Haslam - Sometimes the questions are more important than the answers.
I once used the phrase “(Social media 'guru' name here) is Not Smarter Than You” in a blog post as a way of encouraging folks to create their own content and get their own thoughts out there, rather than be intimidated by those whose credentials are largely made up of starting to blog before you ...

I loved this post, +Richard Becker  - the questions lead us to new ways of thinking about things, which is more important than almost any individual answer can be.

Can we have the future we want and still maintain a measure of privacy? My thoughts, and my presentation from last night's +IgniteNYC:

#privacy   #technology
We're at the point where we can't have it both ways anymore. We can't complain about giving up our privacy at the same time that we're loving the technology

Good stuff from +Tinu Abayomi-Paul. Too many of us get busy and forget to take care of our own business. But it's important to stay on top of it.

I do stuff. You know, on the Internet.
Introduction
After a nearly 20-year career in newspapering, I was part of the Great Newspaper Culling of 2008 and was laid off. Best thing that ever happened to me.

Now I get to spend my days on the Internet. There sure are a lot of cats. Good thing I'm not allergic.
