Again, I highly recommend you stop what you're doing and take 2 minutes and 47 to watch this stunning video. Composed of 3,418 frames taken by Spirit's front-right hazcam and played back at 24 frames per second, it's an amazing time-lapse that covers 4.8 miles of driving over the rover's 5 year, 3 month, 27 day lifetime.
+Eli Tripps, it will likely become a protected site (like the Apollo landing sites on the Moon have become) with an exclusion zone to prevent future missions interfering with it. Think of it as a 'National Heritage' site.
Great job Spirit...a perfect embodiment to the name. It turned a planned 3 month mission into 5 years. I don't feel sad at all...it got stuck several times and got out time after time and kept going. Most humans don't have half that perseverance. Of course the drivers were behind that...but I can't help thinking the machine didn't want to give up either.
Poor little stuck rover... RIP little guy! I hope someone goes to retrieve it at some point in the future (it'll probably be buried under a dune though and near impossible to find). Spirit deserves to be saved in a museum someday.
Technically speaking...APART FROM THE FTL, and the price of TITANIUM....WE CURRENTLY HAVE ALL THE TECHNOLOGY NEEDED TO MAKE GALACTICA....Well the re-imagined version anyway...Its LIFE SUPPORT IS very similar to a LOS ANGELES class Nuclear sub... Similar over-all interior design to a Nimitz class carrier....and WEll, Most of the stuff in the Galactica has been around on flat-tops since WW2
+Amy Shira Teitel is there any chance curiosity can go to Martian and check the status of Spirit? Hoping can take pictures and analyze what went wrong on that track. This is a huge learning tool in +NASA . Maybe curiosity can rescue it or jack it up. Thanks for sharing to the next baby boomers out there another case study to learn. Good job spirit!
I think its great that man continues to advance in technology, this vid is amazing, however I cant help but think, all good for Mars but we still have so much work to do right here on planet Earth, there are still so many dying of hunger!
+Leo Aguelo , +James Field - That would be great if Curiosity could go over and rescue Spirit. Curiosity is going to be going for what? 10 years? It could mosey its way over to where Spirit is. I mean the two previous rovers were only going to last how long? And they have lasted way longer, so anything is possible.
