Just installed a piece of public art in the children's area of the Chugiak-Eagle River Library, Alaska. Here's a post about the process behind refurbishing a 30-foot textile dragon & adding a public art component:

This is the antepenultimate post for the "Boxes of Mystery" series of blog posts. These vintage linens & narratives have been sent to me from all over the world as contributions to the Inheritance Project, forming the raw material for a body of work called "Inheritance," a traveling solo show that explores women's work -- literal and emotional. Much of this cloth has been abandoned or rescued, or is simply ready to be passed on.

I am the final inheritor.

Click for a peek at what arrived at my door this summer, plus some EXCITING NEWS that's arrived since then. While I'm no longer accepting items for the Inheritance Project, there are still so many items left to archive, so this is by no means the last post. Thank to you everyone who contributed to this crowdsourcing project and continue to support my efforts. This wouldn't be the same body of work without your energy, your kindness or your memories (especially the hazy ones).

Not everything that's come my way over the last year for the Inheritance Project has been a doily, or a dresser scarf, or an antimacassar, but it's all had a life and remains a vehicle for memory and emotional response.

Very excited to have work in the public art realm and happy to be painting again. This post shows this latest work installed and how we mounted it.

My Alaskan base makes it tricky to attend exhibitions, so when the Fort Collins Lincoln Center was kind enough to compile photographs of their 34th Annual New Legacies Contemporary Art Quilt Exhibition (AND allow me to share them all with you), I jumped at the opportunity. What a beautiful show. At the end of the post is a list of all the artists, with links. Enjoy!

I've been thinking a lot about "insistent work" and how this relates to a northern landscape as well as the landscape of motherhood. This post is a response to textile artist, Diana Weymar's, work and considers those ideas. http://www.amymeissner.com/blog/cloth-its-a-landscape

The latest contributions to the Inheritance Project have arrived in Alaska from the east coast, midwest and China -- most makers are unknown, as are origins, but they are all very beautiful, labor-intensive examples of women's work. My heartfelt gratitude to these nameless women and to those who've passed them on to me for my own work. I'm happy to consider each piece and what new paths lay ahead.

People ask where artistic inspiration comes from. For me, it comes from family, history and place. People also wonder why we live in Alaska -- so dark and cold in the winter -- but it isn't alway like that. Other times of the year, the landscape is blindingly bright. Life, death and the persistence of seasons, animals and people are lit up all the time. The lessons are lit up. All the time.
