Less than a mile from the Rowan County, Kentucky, clerk’s office, where Kim Davis had made her last stand against gay marriage, my partner and I picked out wedding cupcakes at Artsy Tartsy, a bakery that also happens to sell home decor and children’s dresses. On the table in front of us, still in its protective brown envelope, was our official Kentucky marriage license, issued 40 minutes earlier. The long sheet of paper had our names on it, with ...

+Tim Walters once said (in a slightly different context) something that I thought was really insightful, and hope applies here: "the muddle-through somehow" scenario has historically been more likely than either doomsday or paradise scenarios. I don't think the most likely outcome is that this is our extinction event. I suspect future generations will think of some of the things we take for granted -- like routinely eating food that's traveled thousands of miles -- were insane extravagances. But I think humans will be around to eat something, even if it's mostly textured algae.

As an outdoor runner and pedestrian commuter who uses our local bike path daily, this is a dialogue I'm keenly interested in. Glad to see MassBike elevating and continuing the conversation with the Department of Conservation & Recreation, and I hope it can bring about an eventual attitude shift where the needs of bicycle commuters are treated the same as those of motorists.

If you're even slightly interested in seeing this incredibly moving (and troubling) documentary, do so -- soon. And if it's not playing in a theater near you, CNN has picked it up to broadcast on 24 October.

I love having a neighborhood market like Christo's within easy walking distance! For such a small shop, their fruit and vegetable selection is great -- I've found beautiful leeks and dandelion greens, for example -- and everything is fresh, including the organic eggs they stock. What's more, they're always friendly when I shop, even if it's only to pick up some small item.
