Ampat Varghese or Avy as he is fondly called by real friends works as a New Editor with Deccan Herald since June 2013. Prior to that, he worked with Idiom Design and Consulting Ltd, Bangalore,for almost two years (August 2011 to April 2013) on a variety of projects including drawing up the blueprint for a (non-realised) Design College and Dream:In.
He worked at the prestigious Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology, Bangalore, from June 1999 to May 2011 where he headed the Liberal Arts Department, the Animation Department and was the Academic Dean of the Professional Diploma Programs
at Srishti 2009-2011. He took his sabbatical in May 2011.
Prior to Srishti, he was a media professional for 20 years
holding posts like Senior Editor, Special Correspondent and Chief of
News Services covering arts and culture, science and technology, politics and economics.
He worked with newspapers like West Coast Express (Goa), Financial Express (Chennai), the magazine Herald Review (Bangalore) and Deccan Herald. He has contributed to The Hindu and The Week too.
He has taught mass communications and
media- related subjects in various institutions like the Post-graduate department of Mass Communications and Journalism, Kerala University, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Press Institute at the Press Club, Trivandru.
At Srishti, he played a key role in the New Media Initiative and projects like Synchronisations-Future Academy think tank (2004), led the Tactical
Media Lab whose work went to Ars Electronica 2005, spearheaded the Nokia
Only Planet projects (2006 & 2008) and several student projects at
the Nokia Design Studio embedded in Srishti.
He also did a year with
the New York-based Sakti Group for its IT start-up in India, iSakti
Technologies, as Communications and Business Development Manager
