Top 10 wineries of the week!  Trefethen holds onto #1 and New Jersey's +Willow Creek and Maryland's +Great Frogs Winery prevent it from being a west coast sweep.
Top 10 Wineries of the Week (Apr 17– 23). Welcome to this week's list of U.S. wineries experiencing the most love (or at least page views) from AWG wine lovers. Mark and Sonja Gudgel's review of Volker Eisele Family Estate earned it the top spot for the second week in a row.

Good quality, here, at a reasonable price, while the exclusivity of a thousand case production certainly appeals to many buyers. It’s a fun place among several fun places in downtown Carlton. My suggestion: since +Stone Griffon Vineyard is at the end of the street, make it one of your last stops. The Merlot and Syrah will stand out in contrast to all the Pinot Noir.

By the time we left, though we have visited hundreds of wineries over the past several years, many of them far more famous or far better funded, we had no doubt in our minds: The Volker Eisele Family Estate is the quintessential winery of the nation’s most famous wine producing region, truly emblematic of the agriculture upon which the industry is built, of more than a century of history and tradition in viticulture, and of the American dream to sustain yourself upon a plot of land you can call your own. A throwback to a simpler time, and a family operation in every way; the lover of marble bars and manufactured rocket juice, of glitz and glamor and of all that the Napa Valley has come, in its ugliest places, to resemble would do well to pass it by. But for the true enthusiast of wine, for what wine is and can be, the product of an artisan and a portal into special places and times that cannot be accessed by any other method, an appointment at the Volker Eisele Family Estate may prove to be nothing short of transformative, and an opportunity to experience the Napa Valley for what it once was, and what some of us hope quietly in our hearts that it may one day be again.

If you're wine touring in Oregon, Carlton - a charming, little town with dozens of tasting rooms within walking distance - should be on your map.  +Twelve Wine is a leader in making high quality Oregon pinot at reasonable prices and is a great place to start.

It was difficult reconciling my respect for Coach Vermeil with my love of Napa wines. I enjoy going to sports bars. I enjoy going to wine bars. I felt slightly out of my element in one that was clearly somehow both, however the friendly young lady staffing the room and the smiling images of Coach Vermeil hanging on the walls helped me to settle back into a plush black leather sofa and imbibe a flight of Napa reds while half-watching an NBA game on one of the flat screens. Though certainly not an idyllic destination for every wine connoisseur, Vermeil Wines is perhaps the perfect place to take the friend or spouse who lives for sports, but only reluctantly agreed to join you in wine country. ~Mark Gudgel

Peter Mondavi (moan-dah-vee), for much of his early life Peter Mondavi (mon-day-vee), died on February the 20th, 2016, in his home in St. Helena, California, just about two weeks prior to my visit to his winery. My flights were already booked, and I had born no real expectation of meeting the legendary figure of Napa Valley viticulture and owner of the +Charles Krug Winery, the oldest in the valley. Still, as I progressed slowly up the winding drive toward the utterly massive stone structure on a rainy afternoon in early March, his absence was unmistakable.

+Noble Pig Vineyard & Winery resides in a comfortable, unpretentious but elegant, dark wood room on Main Street, Carlton, Oregon, surrounded by another dozen and a half pretty good tasting rooms. Other than the sidewalk sign, the place stands out by not standing out. Understated confidence seems to prevail throughout both the room and the wine and carries on to the employees.
