This week is Sun Safety Week! Here's your tip of the day: Did you know that insect repellants reduce sunscreen SPF by up to 1/3? When using a combination, use a higher SPF sunscreen and make sure to reapply often!

What foot do you use to brake? Have you ever tried using your left foot? https://www.yahoo.com/autos/why-most-drivers-should-brake-with-their-left-foot-115959573142.html
Braking with your left foot has been a contentious subject ever since the birth of automatic transmissions. If you have just two pedals in your car, and presumably two feet to operate them, then why would you not use one for each?

Suggesting that someone learn to left foot brake and overlap with throttle to correct ill handling vehicle is beyond the average driver. This is evidenced by the number of people so disinterested in learning to drive as to push the self driving cars.

Overlapping brakes with throttle in a corner is about balancing weight over the wheels and traction control near the limits of the tires. The balance of most road going cars is already off so much for front wheel drive that I doubt it would help most of the time.

I am used to managing the weight distribution of my motorcycle. I am used to dealing with front braking and trail braking as well. Of course on a bike, you also have a different dynamic because the differences between the front and rear wheels.

Also as a person who drives a manual transmission car as well, my left foot is good at pressing to the floor fast. The skill is in lifting the left foot in a controlled manner to slip the clutch just enough. Right foot is skilled in controlled pressure for throttle and braking.

Even when I am driving my automatic car, I am very aware of how the traffic is behaving. When I notice an issue developing in front of me, I am willing to drop back from the situation. Lowering speed and preparing to brake. So that is probably a better solution than trying to drive 2 footed. If the solution is looking very imminent, I may even pull my throttle foot up and cover the brake with it.

As I wrote that paragraph, I realise that part of my experience has also been in knowing well what my coast speed loss is. Also my experience is in mostly reasonably aerodynamic vehicles that allow for me to coast a ways without losing enough speed to become a problem in traffic. If I was driving a big brick like a SUV, that might be a lot different.

Check out the national average gas prices year over year! This could mean even more people on the road this Memorial Day weekend, which is always one of the most popular days for road travel of the entire year.
