Take a journey back to 1999, when cell phones were a rarity, dial-up internet access was still used, and Amber had her first #surgery of a 2-step #jpouch process. Amber’s husband +Michael Tresca, a writer and communicator, journaled his thoughts on the day of the surgery. This journal was recently uncovered and Amber reads it to Mike and gets his reactions and further recollections of that challenging day.

I know this isn't supposed to be easy, nothing worthwhile ever is, but it's certainly been far more complicated than anything I envisioned. Enjoy the tangled mess from the depths of my brain as I force myself to continue on this journey. #meditation #IBD #jpouch #stress #thingsthatdontwork

It took me a while to make the image for this post. What do you think of when you think of #meditation? Flowers. A sunset. A mountain. But these are not illustrative of my meditation journey so far.

And then I found the photo below, and it was perfect. See why in my latest post, here:

#Pregnancy and #birth are different for women with #IBD. There are not only challenges that come from the disease itself but the lack of awareness about IBD during pregnancy can lead to less than optimal treatment. +Brooke Abbott of The Crazy Creole Mommy Chronicles describes how she coped with #ulcerativecolitis during her pregnancy and a birth that did not go as she’d hoped or as she’d expected. Learn how everything turned out in the end and find out what Brooke and Amber think #pregnant women with IBD should do to prepare for birth and for those first few weeks with a new baby.

So often with #IBD, the focus is on the digestive tract. Our physicians frequently say that they're hard pressed to deal with the "other" problems that go hand-in-hand with these diseases in the short time of an office visit. #BodyImage is certainly one of those difficulties that gets put by the wayside, yet it can affect all facets of someone's life, maybe even more so than the digestive symptoms. Bringing more attention to this issue, and the need for a "whole body" approach in treating people with #UC and #Crohns, is vital to helping people live fuller lives in spite of #chronicillness. Here's my story of (not) coping with body image issues as they related to my diagnosis of #ulcerativecolitis and navigating adolescence and young adulthood.

Stress and how it affects Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis is a divisive topic because so many patients have been told that stress causes inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We know that IBD isn't caused by stress, but that doesn't mean that having IBD doesn't lead to stress. That's why anyone who has a chronic illness needs a stress relief plan that works for them. On Episode 11 of #AboutIBDPodcast, I talk with Dr Tiffany Taft of Oak Park Behavioral Medicine and find out some ways that you can start on stress relief today.
