Hi all! I was referred over here by +Kris Ten
via a mutual contact, and am looking to spread the word about an upcoming event next month! (Thanks in advance!)
Those of us that have been around Kansas long enough, or even read the news semi-regularly, know about Topeka's Westboro Baptist Church and its followers spreading a message of intolerance. Kansas has a lot of negative perceptions to deal with and their group is not making it any easier to fix the reputation. Luckily though, to counteract some of the negativity, the organization Planting Peace set up their headquarters directly across the street from the WBC. Again, if you've read/seen the news lately, you probably know about the rainbow-striped paint job on their HQ - the Equality House, or maybe the little girl who sold lemonade all summer out front for donations for the Equality House.
This year, the Equality House is putting on a walk-a-thon on October 26, but with a twist. Titled "Drag Down Bigotry", the group is intending to open minds, raise awareness, and raise funding for advocacy programs provided through Equality House... with a walk-a-thon drag show.
. Right out in front of the Equality House... which is right across the street from the WBC. Mind you - this event is not to discriminate against the rights of the WBC, it is to remind everyone else that Equality House is allowed rights as well.
When news of the event started popping up on other social networks, I noticed a lot of former Kansans, and friends in general the world over, saying they wished they could participate and witness the event... but here is the beauty of the event - even if you cannot be there in person, you can help out the cause.
A group of us from Manhattan are making the trek to Topeka next month to show our support of the Equality House and their programs. In the meantime, we are working to raise money for the programming Equality House is able to provide, taking donations at http://www.crowdrise.com/dragdownbigotry/fundraiser/susankraft
. If you are able to send a few dollars that way, it would be greatly appreciated. Even if you're not in a position to, sharing this link with family and friends will be a huge help. Our team goal is $1,800, but I know with enough shares, we can easily surpass that amount for a great cause.
