Insurers still crave reform despite premiums fall

Insurers say there will be no let-up in the campaign for whiplash reform despite motor insurance premiums falling again.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) today revealed that the average price paid for the a motor insurance policy fell by £2 during the third quarter of 2014, to £356.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt has pinpointed the price of litigation as one of the ‘shocking costs’ of poor care harming the NHS.

Figures from the NHS Litigation Authority show compensation payouts for clinical negligence have risen from £592m in 2005/06 to £1.3bn in 2012/13.

Claimant awarded over £500,000 in compensation from high street optician after botched surgery

Judge criticises Optical Express' sharp sales practices and 'inappropriate' procedure.

The high street optician Optical Express has been ordered to pay more than £500,000 in damages after laser surgery ruined a book dealer's eyesight.

Staff at the high street optician were found to have failed to warn the claimant, Stephanie Holloway, of the risks involved and the possible complications linked to the procedure.

edical compensation ‘outstripping public finances

Medical defendants have warned that public finances will not be able to cope unless clinical negligence compensation is radically reformed.

The Medical Defence Union, which represents medical practitioners in claims against them, says compensation payments are rising by 10% every year.
