Don't miss this book.

What I love most is that it is a history within a history. Everybody should read it to see what this world was like through the eyes of 48 remarkable people who each have their own stories to tell. It is like travelling through time to places I’ve only heard about. Places that now have texture and substance and intimacy.

Richard Poplak is brilliant in dissecting Zuma's interview on Chinese television. This excruciating piece of television explains everything, including why we have #FeesMustFall and the idiot board of the #SABC.

It all trickles down from the morally bankrupt vacuum at the top.
'He writes: Zuma, like Buddha, speaks the language of silence, so no one in this country really knows what he stands for (besides the obvious, of course).

Think about this for a second: a sophisticated, populous, middle-income nation with a large international profile has no fucking idea what the president thinks, if he thinks anything at all.

This absence, this God-shaped hole, is the space into which we stuff any manner of political idolatry. It’s the vastness in which we burn tyres, break a bunch of shit, battle political phantoms, make art, make love, make families, try to figure our way through our history, drink until our hangovers become our Weltshmertz.

And so, the CCTV interview. I have watched it many times, and it serves as a reminder of the dangers of not knowing the cypher who ostensibly runs this place.
...

Perhaps weirdest of all was Zuma’s mannerisms. He appeared to be tweaking on a combo of uppers and downers, as if he was trying to kill the nyaope high with a jug of Nyquil. His pate was sweaty, he tugged at his nose, he shifted back and forth in his seat.
Regardless of how innocuous the question, he reacted as if Tian had blindsided him with the particulars of the Khwezi case. He karate-chopped the air while making weird hip-hoppish gun gestures.

His summation of South African democracy was insane...'

And you'll have to follow the link to read the rest.

The one time in the last few years President Jacob Zuma gave an interview, it resulted in an international embarrassment. Truth? Nope. Coherence? Nope. RICHARD POPLAK does some forensic YouTubing, and finds a Trump among the pixels.

Justice Malala is correct with this post.

The violence and intimidation at universities has to stop. I am appalled by what has been happening on the campuses. Although I agree that education should be free, and can be free, those students who behave like criminals must be stopped.

You cannot get blood from a stone. The universities cannot give them what they are demanding. Students must take their fight off the university properties to the government.

He writes: 'We cannot be for the burning of university libraries and science laboratories while we claim to be for education. We cannot be for progress while we glorify violent, sexist, backward behaviour. We cannot be for our children and yet keep silent or applaud as their future goes up in flames.

It is time to stop this in its tracks. It is time for government to support the vice-chancellors. It is time for student activists to isolate these violent elements. It is time for the police to enforce the law — identify, arrest and prosecute those who break the law.

It is time to acknowledge that not all within this movement is right and upstanding, that it has a streak and factions that undermine everything that it stands for.

It might be fashionable to justify some of the things that are happening within the #FeesMustFall movement. But the truth is that a non-elected minority (these are people who are not in the student representative councils, for example) is holding our children, our future, hostage.'

Follow the link to read the post. You should.
