My latest for Archer Magazine: Can safe-words end rape culture in the US?

The Red Stops Rape campaign posits that, no matter what, people have a right to their own body.
Trigger warning: This article contains discussion of rape, and rape culture. With a single word, Rebecca Blanton, a writer and performance artist in Sacramento, California, is on a mission to eradicate rape culture in the United States. That word is 'red'. Red is the most common 'safe-word' in ...

And the Oscar goes to...white people.
Spoiler alert – the plot of The Revenant is discussed herein. “The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.” - Viola Davis, winner of the 2015 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series The 88th Academy Awards will …

A piece on the fitness industry's sketchy Instagram tactics and the danger of gurus.
I kind of almost joined a quasi-yoga cult in my early twenties. We sang in Sanskrit while we Chair-ed and Warrior-ed and Boat-ed. By chanting and spinning our arms and holding our hands in specific mudras we invoked the power of archangels, whose light would surround our cars and protect us from accidents, according to …

GASP! More duplicitous marketing strategies emerge in the diet industry. Cc: Lean Cuisine
Lipstick-on-a-pig marketing tactics are being utilized by yet another lady-focused company: like Special K and Dove before it, Lean Cuisine is getting all sappy and empowerment-y in efforts to dance around the fact that they sell diet food, that they are a company fueled by dreams of weight loss and slim physiques, and that many …

I wrote a letter to Bethenny Frankel, creator of the Skinnygirl cocktail and foodstuffs line, because drunk snacking while being skinny is one of my favorite activities and Beth is a fucking inspiration. Read it on The Reject Pile.
I know you sold Skinnygirl Cocktails for like a bajillion dollars years ago, but since you are queen of the remaining Skinnygirl empire, I am so very overdue in congratulating you on your achievements as a female business owner, and in thanking you for making it easier for me and my girlfriends to choose the …

It's my birthday! So here's a piece about Pilates, the first class I ever took, and a burrito.
I’ll never forget my first Pilates class. It was in 2013, at the now-extinct Danbury, Connecticut YMCA, and I had eaten a huge burrito a few hours earlier. Pilates has an intense abdominal focus, and I huffed, puffed, and burped my way through the dual challenge of completing a tough core workout while digesting a large …

In 2014 I went on a road trip and wrote about it—only I didn't write about how it ended. A year later, here's "The End of the Road," more an exercise in not-writing than writing.
It was about this time last year that I returned to Connecticut from Seattle after a four-month-long trek across the United States in a 27-year-old Volkswagen hatchback. I chronicled this journey with the travel ‘zine Wand’rly, and in my last piece for them, I was straddling the country, exhausted and depressed in Connecticut, my beloved …

A friendly, capable, and honest shop. I called in with a squealing alternator belt, and Tony told me to come down that day. He tightened it, added a bolt, and I was on my way 20 minutes later. AMW has been in business for close to 40 years, and for good reason! Many thanks.

Jon was a fantastic instructor. I felt safe and comfortable throughout the lesson and learned a lot about parasailing. Would definitely take another lesson!
