Happy 3rd Birthday Google+
Requoting this awesome post I wrote on the First Birthday Year of Google Plus... - It all still applies.... (https://plus.google.com/u/0/107982618909749811163/posts/dGxWCXCNMmo
Dear Google Plus People,
Exactly one year ago today (June 28, 2011) I went to my network to find who would have an invite to this new social network from the biggest name in "internet" - Google. Someone DID have an invite.... and next thing you know I was in.
I also invited over 50 people that first day before invites were shut down. Connections from Linked in, Twitter, Facebook and Empire Avenue. It was so different! Sharing large pictures, editing posts and what was this hangout thing? I started a hangout that very day... people joined.. I had a blast. I've started one pretty much every day since. It is scary the amount of hours I've spent in a hangout in the last year. :)
I have never experienced the ghost town idea. It actually floors me that people think that. 1 month in private beta I had 5k of people following me. By 6 months 40k. It took me close to 3 years of regular interactions on Twitter to reach that same number. I invested the time here, changed how I did things from other networks, tracked my results of what worked and constantly helped people to connect here.
Things were very different in those first few months though. There was no block, no spam, no shared circles heck.. there wasn't even a way to search. Animated graphics were popular. It was highly tech and geek. I totally loved every moment of it.
Without even realizing it, I stopped using my Facebook and Twitter as much. It just kinda happened. There was so many exciting conversations and interests going on here on G+ that my time just naturally was spent here... connecting. Even though almost 99.9% were strangers . Google put me on the Suggested User List in December which changed everything about this space and more importantly my life.
I have met in real life over 200 people that I did not know before Google+. Some from across the country, many across the globe. I went on a cruise with some fabulous G+ ladies. I spent New Years in Washington DC with people from all over. I went to SXSW and hugged many of these crazy fun people i'd met in hangouts. Atlanta, New Orleans, Calgary, Dallas, Houston, Orlando.. I met Gplus people I'd talked with here in all of them. Recently I spent a month in San Francisco and got to go to Google's head office and meet much of the team behind this great platform. I hope to continue to meet more of you G+ people as I travel. Pretty amazing stuff for this Canadian Gal.
I am honored that each and every one of you choose to follow me and my random thoughts here on Google Plus every day. This platform has truly allowed me to "Find my Voice" and "Make a Noise" (http://youtu.be/blN7M39yh0I
) I have had more in depth conversations and met more amazing people in the last year that are interested in the same things I am.. than all my previous years on this earth combined. Google Plus is the biggest networking event I've ever attended. I eagerly look forward to seeing what amazing mind blowing changes you have in store for us next +Google. Thank you for everything you do. ♥
Won't you make a post and share your G+ story? I'd love to hear them. Use #whygplus
And all of that is still true today.. except more people, more experiences and more awesomeness...
I appreciate all you millions of people who comment, +1 and reshare along with me here every day...
