Yes, the idea of a dystopian Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy is irreverent. But every generation gets its own riff on Louisa May Alcott's classic story.

"Politically correct" language gets lambasted for its censoriousness. But these guides' biggest crime is promoting wordy language that's as imprecise as the words they want to replaces.

The very fact that someone was gay or transgender used to be news. Now, sometimes, it's just a fact, and not always a very interesting one.

You can't treat a woman like she's immoral and then be shocked when your audience stones her like she's a witch.

Story
Introduction
I'm the culture writer for the Washington Post's Opinions sections, which means I think big thoughts about Captain America, Archie Comics, and the sexual politics of Game of Thrones for a living. Before I was at the Post, I founded the culture and sports sections at ThinkProgress, wrote about federal personnel policy for Government Executive, and was the fact-checker for National Journal. I live in Washington, DC. And She-Hulk is my alter ego.
