For those of you who have friend who use Mac OS, bring them to the open side, by introducing these open source apps to them.
Did that shiny, elegant new Macbook make a not-so-tiny dent in your bank account? Don’t worry, you won’t have to burn holes in your pockets to get useful apps for your Mac.

Just thought I'd say "hey" and introduce myself. I recently got my Tech license, my call is K2AMP. I've really been bitten by the amateur radio bug. Have been a big Linux fan for about 10 years. I'm liking the podcast. You guys do a good job. I currently only have a Yeasu mobile for 2M. A friend recently gave me a Kenwood TS-120S but don't have a mic or antenna just yet. I'm just trying to learn as much as I can.

I don't know if I've posted this or not, couldn't readily find it if I did. Anyway, has anyone used/tried Shackbox Linux? I'm loading it on a spare machine as we speak. Interested in any comments.

Well, +Jason M I decided to give Andy's Ham Linux another go and take your advice. I'm going to go with another desktop environment. It's nice to have all of that software pre-installed.

I thought I had read somewhere that this project wasn't really going to get off the ground. Is that correct or is it under continued development? I was quite interested in it when I first heard about it.

Yes, as a user I can confirm that it's still going and I'm still getting regular updates on my phone (a reloaded Nexus 4)

Hi. Just found your site (and podcast). Thanks for all  you do. I have a question...while listening to your review of the Dell XPS with linux you mentioned that you weren't a "LastPass fan" and I was wondering why. I have been using LastPass for a number of years and am interested in your issues with it. Not to argue, but to possibly learn something that I wasn't aware of. Again, thanks for the site, podcast and community.

If nothing else, Logmein is very proud of their products and their pricing shows it.

Digital Modes  -

My local club installed a new Fusion repeater in place of our previous analog repeater. Now, when someone is on digital I get a horrible "freight train" sound, for lack of a better term. I've been told that I can turn on tone squelch to fix it but have been unable to get the digital noise to stop. Can someone please explain in more detail? Thanks in advance.

Is there any way to connect my Kenwood TS-120S to my computer to be able to use things like logging or any program that communicates with the radio, such as digital modes?

I use SignaLink USB and HRD for my old Kenwood TS-820S. Works great with digital modes.

Question: When I can purchase a new radio, should I be interested in D-Star capability?

The good thing about an Icom 7100 is that it will take care of most of your ham radio needs, HF, 6M, 2M, and 440mhz and D-Star for approx $1500.00 USD, not bad for all that it does. A good D-star dual band radio is 1/3 of that price, or you can look around and find a bargain at a hamfest, maybe?

Went to my first hamfest today. Have to say that I was underwhelmed. There was quite a bit of good stuff there. But there was every bit as much "not-so-good-stuff", too. But like it is said, one man's junk is another man's treasure.

Story
Tagline
Business owner, motorcycle rider, Ham (the radio and personality), sports lover, decent guy I guess.
Introduction
I'm a small business owner and a motorcycle lover. My company is A & S Technology Solutions and my independent AMSOIL dealership.

I am also the Virginia Assistant State Officer for the Southern Cruisers Riding Club.

I am truly a geek in most senses of the word. I run my business on nothing but Macs but I love Windows because it keeps me in business. I'm also a huge fan of Linux, mostly Linux Mint. I recently became a licensed Ham, um, Amateur Radio operator (K2AMP).

Love sports, especially football, NASCAR, golf, and baseball. Not into Cricket yet, but am willing to learn.  I am in a great relationship with a wonderful woman who spoils me. It's doesn't get much better than that.
Bragging rights
I have 4 kids and 5 grandchildren. Have been self-employed since 2003.
