Reflecting on 2015...

Another year has gone by and before we know it, we hearing Christmas carols bellowing from every corner of public spaces, telling us - "it’s time to reflect on your annual achievements and take a well-deserved break". In light of this, AltGen rounded up the team and took the 'Forgotten Route' to Matjiesfontein on an epic adventure of rich history, fine wine, train tripping, two minute bus rides, universal olive uses and wine, did we mention wine? A lot of it.

Since Matjiesfontein has a rich history we opted to set the scene, commencing our journey in the city of Cape Town, our guide telling us of a bygone era. As we strolled through the Company's Gardens lobbing peanuts to squirrels and pigeons, we were told of a time when land was claimed from the ocean, diamonds were discovered, blood spilt and the big five roamed table mountain. As the pigeons forced an airborne attack for Sarah's palm of peanuts it was apparent how far we have come from those days and how much is yet to be achieved.

We then headed out of the city, making tracks to Worcester train station with a quick stop at Kirabo wine farm, lining our stomachs with wine infused cupcakes and fine wines. As we sat on the train passing Touwsrivier CPV solar farm, panels glistening in the sun, it reminded us of our mission - "to create a greener future for economic development in Africa". We envision a world where doors of opportunity are opened from a grass root level, so we have facilitated this by funding the CRSES Teacher Professional Development Programme for Renewable Energy to be taught in the Franschoek Valley Schools.
On arrival to Matjiesfontein, we were welcomed with drinks and the sound of a phonograph relaying a nostalgic tune. We spent the day strolling the quaint forgotten town, taking a bus ride with a comic guide who must have used 3 phrases throughout the trip, "vat hom fluffy" being our favorite (used a record breaking 20 times within the two minute ride). It seems apt to adopt his expression in reflection of 2015, we really have let nothing stand in our way - we opened a branch in Joburg, placed 157+ individuals in renewable energy jobs and successfully worked on projects in Africa, growing our footprint.
Saturday arrived and it was home time, we headed for Platform 62 Ashton to taste brandy and wine, with our last stop being the Marbrin Olive farm, here we sampled a variety of olive products and learnt of the many uses for olives.

Our trip provided us a great wealth of knowledge on South African history, including the fact that there seemed to be a common dominator that people enjoyed spitting in public spaces rather regularly, but more than this we learnt that bonding is a vital part to any teams success, creating relationships with those you see every day should extend further than just the work environment. Creating a strong team is about learning the strengths and weaknesses of your team so you can better work together as one unit with a common goal.

Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to you all,

The AltGen Team

After all the activity going on in the AltGen offices since the announcement of the preferred bidders, our new software management system and two new employees, the AltGen team was glad to welcome the Djembe Drummers to our offices to help relive a bit of stress.

Unbeknown to the AltGen team, Sean had organised a surprise drumming session. Luckily the drumming is used to assist in beating out stress as opposed to forming a company band...

Needless to say we all had a great time and feel ready for the week!

Thank you ‪#‎djembedrumming‬!
