Just a helpful note for anyone trying to get their gmail account down to Inbox 0. There was an annoying issue happening in one of our employees gmail accounts today, it was showing 4 unread messages but 3 of them ended up being very old and could not be located easily. When the label “filter: unread” was selected it included all of the unread emails in the promotions tab and the social tab which made it impossible to find the truly unread messages in the primary inbox. To find just the primary inbox messages you can copy the code below into the search box at the top of the gmail page:

label:unread in:inbox -category:social -category:promotions -category:updates -category:forums

Interesting article detailing some of Google's previously internal data regarding websites in their index was released recently.

Google indicated that they more than doubled the number of web spam notifications they sent to webmasters in 2015 vs 2016. This is actually fairly reflective of the 62% jump in hacked sites/servers that we were contacted to assist in cleaning in 2016 vs 2015.

Although not specifically indicated in Google's released reporting, most of the vulnerabilities reported to us were directly or indirectly related to the use of outdated CMS (content management system) software. Because of the open nature and widespread use of this type of web software, hackers can easily identify exploits in the core, or plugin/extension files and execute malicious attacks.

Unfortunately you can’t avoid this risk 100%. However what you can do is keep your software up to date with the latest updates and patches. Additionally, keep your plugin/extension use to a minimum and only use plugins/extensions from reputable developers that are frequently updated. Following these simple rules will help reduce your chances of getting your site hacked and possibly de-indexed by Google.

We have recently started a new continuing education course at Altec HQ called test driven Laravel. Its an amazingly well put together course that we are very happy to have found. For anyone out there looking to build on their laravel skills we highly recommend it: https://adamwathan.me/test-driven-laravel/

One of our team members was on a bike ride near forest part last week and snapped this quick pic. We have all herd a lot about the advancements in self driving vehicles for the consumer market but far less talked about is the coming automation of the way we move goods on large scale (semi's, trains, planes/drones ect...).

We ran into this error today after setting up a new laravel local environment:

"The only supported ciphers are AES-128-CBC and AES-256-CBC with the correct key lengths."

Luckily there is a simple fix for this, documented below:

php artisan key:generate

*This will save an APP_KEY to your local .env file which will then be used to encrypt data.

Has your website traffic dropped (or risen) lately? If so a recent change to Google search might be to blame.

Google has recently released an algorithm ranking update specifically targeting local results. Speculation points to the change involving reducing spammy results. The update has been deemed the "Possum" update by the community because a lot of webmasters initially thought their listings were removed or "dead" only to realize that they were wrong and their listing was just buried deep within the results.

If your traffic has changed within the last week, make sure to check your local results to see if they have changed
