The subtle message to AHIP in the new "A Better Way" proposal might be, "We aren't your friend!"

http://ow.ly/SgtM301BMGI
Proposals could be tough on health insurers' ability to manage claim risk.

House passes "let small groups reimburse workers' individual premiums bill" + Why the Obama administration opposes the double-the-HSA deduction limit bill.

Meanwhile, a separate small-group premium reimbursement bill sails through the House.

Aflac's sneaky (in a GOOD way!!!), for-profit effort to attract healthy consumers to short-term disability insurance while dealing with the problem that typical U.S. workers have no emergency cash + an instant disability insurance sales website.

A new policy rider from Aflac rewards loyal purchasers who avoid filing claims

Really: The broker's answer to the small-group client's "Why on earth can't I...?" question bill.

(Even if the bill doesn't pass: at least broker's can point to articles about it to explain WHY employers can't just reimburse workers for individual health insurance premiums.)

The individual reimbursement cap would start at $5,130 for individuals and $10,260 for families

The Rhode Island public exchange hopes revenue from a premium assessment and other sources will make up for an end to federal grant funding in 2017.

About 12% of the 40,000 current enrollees are in small-group plans.

What's weird is that the one area of bipartisanship in Congress seems to be that insurers having enough cash to pay claims is not a very high priority.

It's interesting to see that the White House seems to hate the HSA deduction increase part a little more than the exchange plan premium subsidy clawback part.

This is, frankly, not my favorite kind of story to write. But readers' favorite stories are, "The Obama administration is going to ban your business with this bill!" stories and "Awful stories involving older people in many states or cities" stories, and the Obama administration doesn't always make a major effort to ban your business.

This is one of the situations in which insurance people say, "antiselection," and nod solemly, and no one else really understands what the heck is going on.

I think one point about the ACA exchanges is: If they were about the same size but backed by Google, everyone would be oohing and aahing about how cool they were.
