Many parents struggle to understand our very complicated sensory systems. While many of us were taught in school that we have 5 senses (hearing, vision, taste, touch, and sight), this is not quiet the whole picture when it comes to our sensory systems. This is a nice diagram of the many different branches which affect our sensory systems. Occupational Therapist receive specialized training in sensory disorders and can help children overcome challenges related to sesory issues.

The importance of Early Intervention cannot be underestimated. By addressing deficits early, children are often able to catch up with peers becuase the gap in their skills is not that significant and they have not learned lots of bad habits which need to be unlearned.
