So agree.
I like to call failure by its real name. Not some sugar-coated, feel-good word. Positive thinking isn't about renaming difficult concepts.

What we don't know so often haunts us. And as writers we write what haunts us. "What were the roots of violence in my family?" Mikal Gilmore answers in Shot in the Heart. "What precisely happened to my relatives who died in the Holocaust?" Daniel Mendelsohn answers in The Lost. "What can I know of my mother's sister or sister-in-law who had a baby outside her marriage in rural China when all I have of her are rare oral stories?" answers Maxine Hong Kingston in the first vignette of Woman Warrior.

Details

In Past Present, my new online creative writing course, we'll be using literary techniques to tell true stories using historical evidence. Primarily government documents; newspapers; letters and diaries; and interviews. We'll pay attention to how these historical topics we're engaged with resonate with current lived issues, bringing the past present, so to speak. The course will be a place to learn and practice new research techniques and to practice using found details honestly in nonfiction and fiction.

Students will pick a topic they are interested in and emerge from the course 4-weeks later with a number of research tools, and a detailed research plan and budget. I'll look at up to 5 pages of writing each week, or listen to 5 minutes of oral storytelling each week if that is the student's primary genre. The main focus of the class will be generating new work and learning research tools. Therefore students should expect to leave with early drafts of short pieces rather than final drafts.

The course will begin June 3rd, 2013. It will be 4-weeks long and end June 30th. There will be one brief set meeting each week to discuss the readings and the next due assignment. I'll be holding office hours and available for questions periodically. Please be in touch via FaceBook or email (alison (at) alisonbergblomjohnson.com), if interested.
