I was recently interviewed by Acaté about my experience photographing the Matsés tribe, in the Amazon region of Peru.  It was an amazing and eye-opening experience that I would love to share with you all.  You can read the interview and see the photos here.

Visiting the Matses tribe was a highlight of my 3 year journey through Latin America.  They were the final of 10 tribes I visited for my 3 month project, Portraits of The Disappearing Amazon.

Arriving to the remote village was a huge struggle, through sweat, frustration and tears.  A 3 day boat ride to Iquitos, followed by days waiting in the tropical heat for the military light plane, to take my partner and me to Angamos (the deep jungle bordering on Peru and Brazil).  Following this, I searched Angamos for the illusive head chief who was the only one allowed to give me permission to visit other villages in his region.  He was reluctant but after days of chasing him, eventually allowed us to go forward to another village where I would find what I was looking for - villagers wearing the traditional dress.

But there was no fuel to get there by boat.  It was dry season and the cargo boats carrying petrol couldn't get into the village because the rivers were too low.  More days of waiting.  Finally we had permission to enter, and petrol to get there...8 hours in a leaky canoe, and we arrived there in the dark (with no lights).

The welcome was warm and I slept well in a palm thatch hut....

Below: A young Matses girl, the whiskers painter on her face imitating the spines piercing the nose of her elders.

Yeah, I'm OK thanks ... surviving the wet and windy weather in Wales ... actually it was sunny yesterday and again today.  Expect to be back in Peru before mid Feb.  I might dig out a couple of pictures for the Survival competition too .... more to go through my own selection process rather than cos I have any hope.
Very best to you,
Dilwyn
