The Museum of the Sea and Salt is primarily ethnological and explains the complex relationship between the sea, salt and the people of Torrevieja. You will find a variety of attractions within the museum, amongst which of particular note, are the items made in the museum’s workshop. As well as maintaining and restoring the different museum exhibits, it produces exquisite work that reflects many aspects of city life. It is regarded as the most important museum of the city.

The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Mondays and Public Holidays. On Tuesday and Sunday, it is open for half day from 10am to 2pm. On Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday it is open from 10am to 2pm and again from 4.30pm to 8pm.

It’s a small museum; you will have discovered all of it within 15 to 30 minutes. Entrance is for free.

While on holiday at El Bungalow 108, make a visit to the market in La Mata, it’s a great place to catch a bargain for clothing, leather, shoes, sandals, handbags, bedding, curtains. There are also stalls selling fruits and vegetables, delicatessen items, sausages and cured meats. It is very popular and gets busy, it’s best to go early to get the best local produce – but watch out for the women armed with their shopping trolleys!

The market boosts over 200 stalls and is open every Wednesday from 8am to 1pm in the afternoon. From your bungalow, the market is just 5 minutes by car and 20 minutes walking distance.

Visit Torre del Moro - La Mata

On the Cervera Cape is the Cervera Cape Tower from Spain’s moorish period. It is also known as Torre del Moro (Moorish Tower). It was first build in 14th AC to monitor the cost line to avoid potential pirate or Barber raids which were common in the past. Fires where lit on top of the towers like the Torre del Moro along the coast of Spain to warn of invading Arabs from northern Africa. The tower went throughout many changes in its history and it has a base diameter of nine meters. This old watch tower is a replica and is a memory of past Torrevieja times.

As an ever growing and developing tourist center, Torre La Mata – or simply La Mata – offers a lovely and unique Spanish feel to it and is only a quick five-minute drive from Pinomar. The town offers everything from shops, restaurants, and cafes to grab everything from sun block to a delicious bite to eat.

While there, you will notice that nearly the entire town is surrounded by a large natural saltwater lake, which helps to form something called “Salinas de La Mata”; an official Spanish Nature Reserve. Thanks to this reserve, you can see a wide variety of bird life and species that make a home there, making it a fantastic place for bird lovers and watchers. Another option would be to enjoy some horseback riding available around the salt lakes in town, perfect for families traveling with younger kids.

If you are heading to La Mata to pick up some groceries or other various food items, a great option would be to head into town on Wednesday any time from 8am to 1pm to enjoy the La Mata Market. Here, you can find everything from fresh produce and foods to bedding, shoes, handbags, and handicrafts. Other supermarkets that are open daily include Dicost Supermercado located next to El Pozo Bar or Super Valu off Calle Atena.

If you like to discover some of La Mata’s great eateries, you are in luck as the options are far from few. For an early morning breakfast, be sure to check out MA Creperie or Sea View International Restaurant for lunch or dinner, which tends to be a favorite amongst travelers with plenty of great dishes to choose from. For another view of the beach, Zana Kebab offers a great atmosphere alongside good foods and drinks as well. Other spots to consider include El Pozo, La Mar de Bien, and La Despensa.

For those hoping to spend their evening out on the town, consider checking out some of the many great bars in La Mata. Besides the usual bars you head to for just the drinks, La Mata is also home to several fantastic tapas bars such as Il Bacio Beach Club. For a cold one after a long day, then head to either Kiosco Rocio, Bar Carlos, or Pub Boys.
