Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy. Class starts tomorrow!

Like or not, ideas and concepts in Artificial Intelligence are modeled using mathematics and algorithms. This class presents a more philosophical view to some of these areas. In particular, the class plans to discuss probability, decision theory, rational choice, logic, and multiagent systems (such as voting). It also covers other topics like infinity, formal theories of truth, and quantum logic. Hannes Leitgeb (one of the instructors) is a great guy and I had the pleasure of attending one of his lectures during his stay at Pittsburgh.

Since this class is a philosophy class, I expect the discussions on the forums to be vibrant and enlightening. The class will probably touch on potential problems in rationality, such as paradoxes in expected utility theory. I hope that it will highlight that (at least in the philosophical community) there are still disagreements over what is considered rational. And any of us who has studied from Russell and Norvig's AI book know that AI could be renamed computational rationality.

This class should be of interest to those who want to know more about the foundations of AI!

To attract a happy relationship, define what you want in a partner, tell the whole world, and then filter and select for matches.

It's important not to waste too much time dealing with partial matches. Once someone has shared something about themselves that's a mismatch for what you want, let go and move on quickly. Don't try to force a mismatch to look like a match.

So for example, if you desire a partner who's vegan, geeky, and openly affectionate and you're talking to someone who says...

"I love a good steak." ... "You'll be dining alone then, Cruella."

"I never kiss on the first date." ... "I never date anyone I haven't kissed. Try 18thcenturydating.com -- might be more your speed."

"Star Trek? I dunno, I've never seen it." ... "Then you've got some catching up to do. Come back -- 1 year."

If you can avoid getting bogged down with mismatches, you'll prove to the universe that you're ready for the good stuff. But if you settle for a partial match that isn't what you actually want, the good stuff can't get through, and so you'll be stuck.

Life loves to throw partial matches your way to see if you're strong enough to reject them and to hold out for a real match.

When a resolute young fellow steps up to the great bully, the world, and takes him boldly by the beard, he is often surprised to find it comes off in his hand, and that it was only tied on to scare away the timid adventurers.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
