I can relate. Beaches and rivers do it for me too.

What images help you de-stress? For me, it's lakes. Here's my lake of the day.

Freelance Writers: Get Connected and Hone Your Skills at ASJA’s New Avenues in Journalism Conference

Join the American Society of Journalists and Authors, San Francisco State University, and the Online News Association as they offer tools and networking to help you navigate the changing landscape of freelance journalism and writing during New Avenues in Journalism, a new conference for writers.

On October 10-11, writers from across every field will come together to learn about generating custom content, crowd-funding for projects, new publishing models and platforms, and what their peers are doing to stay ahead of the curve.

For more information visit:

Love the notion of "Dark Social" as a web traffic driver. So true!

What a fantastic post by +Alexis C. Madrigal about "Dark Social." This certainly matches my experience. And another dimension - even things that may appear as links from Facebook and Twitter may have first emerged from email and other "dark social" networks.  I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets a great link from a friend via email and then shares it out over Twitter, G+, or Facebook.

And all these things might overlap.  For example, I saw links to this piece go by on twitter, but there was never enough context for me to follow the link. But when someone sent it to me in email, with a bit more context, I followed the link, read the story, and reshared it here (and will do the same on Twitter.)*

Hoping for a recovery so this girl can keep on fighting.

A bit of hopeful news about Malala, the Pakistani girl whom the Taliban shot because she was advocating for girls' education. A family friend texted me to say that although she is still on a ventilator, she is now moving her feet. It's the first response they've seen from her, and they're very encouraged. Fight on, Malala, we're all hoping and praying for you!

Mark Bennington is a miracle worker. For several years now he's come to the ASJA Annual Writers Conference and taken pictures of scores of people essentially on the run. Natural conditions, no prep, and everyone comes out looking absolutely brilliant. Our members and attendees come back every year to get their new MB headshot--they tell us he's one of the best things about the event. His pictures are just part of it, though; he's just one of the very best people to work with, hands down.
