An Enhanced and "Bleeding Edge" elementary OS Freya v3.1+
(best to use after a CLEAN elementary OS Freya installation)

ONLY FOR POWER USERS AND TO USE @ YOUR OWN RISK

1. Make sure your FRESH elementary OS installation is Up-To-Date
Run "Software Updater" from Slingshot (don't use terminal)
REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM (use the "Reboot Now" button after update)
(exactly what it says and very important!)

2. Add elementary OS Daily PPA
~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:elementary-os/daily
Run "Software Updater" from Slingshot (don't use terminal)
REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM (properly Log Out 1st, then restart)
(this will update all integrated elementary apps/files for the latest bug-fixes)

3. Add GNOME Main & Staging PPA
~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging
Run "Software Updater" from Slingshot (don't use terminal)
REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM (properly Log Out 1st, then restart)
(this will update all integrated GNOME apps/files to v.3.12.x)

4. Add X.Org Edgers & Ubuntu Graphics Drivers PPA
~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
Run "Software Updater" from Slingshot (don't use terminal)
REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM (properly Log Out 1st, then restart)
(these PPA will give you the latest graphic drivers, etc...)

5. Make sure you have the Ubuntu Vivid LTS Enablement Stack
~$ sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-core-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-video-all-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-vivid libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts-vivid
REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM (properly Log Out 1st, then restart)
(this will install latest Ubuntu Vivid LTS Linux kernel and HWE Stack)

6. Enable Partner and Independent software repositories and install Proprietary Graphic Drivers
~$ sudo software-properties-gtk
-> click on tab "Other Software"
-> check both "Canonical Partners" and "Independent"
-> click on "Close" and "Reload"
~$ sudo software-properties-gtk
-> click on tab "Additional Drivers"
-> check your preferred display driver
-> click on "Apply Changes" and "Close"
REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM (properly Log Out 1st, then restart)
(also necessary for installing some useful apps/files later on)

7. Install Ubuntu Restricted Extras
~$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras unace rar sharutils p7zip arj lzip lunzip lame flac
(no Ubuntu/elementary setup should be without it, period)

8. Install elementary+ Icon Theme & elementary+ Configurator
~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cybre/elementaryplus
~$ sudo apt-get update
~$ sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
~$ sudo apt-get install elementaryplus
Run "elementary+ Configurator" from Slingshot and switch on the "Core Icon Theme"
REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM (properly Log Out 1st, then restart)
(nice elementary OS style icons/indicators for third party applications)

9. Install elementary Tweaks & elementary Utility (Plugs)
~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:donadigo/eutility
~$ curl -sL http://i-hate-farms.github.io/spores/install | sudo bash -
~$ sudo apt-get install eutility elementary-tweaks
(they always come in very handy and are elementary OS specific)

10. Install extra (official) Switchboard Plugs
~$ sudo apt-get install switchboard-plug-online*
~$ sudo apt-get install switchboard-plug-networking
~$ sudo apt-get remove switchboard-plug-gcc-network
(only installable when you've added the elementary OS Daily PPA)

11. Install extra (official) elementary apps

13. Install useful extra GNOME apps
~$ sudo apt-get install gnome-disk-utility gnome-system-monitor brasero brasero-cdrkit brasero-contracts
~$ sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
(latest versions when you've added the GNOME Main & Staging PPA)

15. Install latest GParted Partition Editor v0.23.0
~$ sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu trusty-getdeb apps" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/getdeb.list'
~$ wget -q -O - http://archive.getdeb.net/getdeb-archive.key | sudo apt-key add -
~$ sudo apt-get update
~$ sudo apt-get install gparted
(just what it says and very usefull for Power Users)

16. Remove Ubuntu Software Center and replace it with App Grid
~$ sudo apt-get purge software-center software-center-aptdaemon-plugins
~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:appgrid/stable
~$ sudo apt-get update
~$ sudo apt-get install appgrid synaptic
(exactly what is says, with the addition of Synaptic Package Manager)

=======================================================
YOUR UP-TO-DATE OPERATING SYSTEM IS NOW READY FOR FURTHER TWEAKING AND OTHER APPLICATIONS INSTALLATION. FROM NOW ON, WHEN USING THE MAGICAL SOFTWARE UPDATER, ALL APPS, FILES, KERNEL, DRIVERS, etc, WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY UPDATED TO THERE LATEST VERSIONS ;-)
=======================================================

For the real "adventurous", one could also add the elementary OS Staging PPA
~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:elementary-os/staging
Run "Software Updater" from Slingshot (don't use terminal)
~$ sudo apt-get install wingpanel-indicator-ayatana wingpanel-indicator-keyboard
~$ sudo rm -f /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop
REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM (properly Log Out 1st, then restart)
(this PPA will give you the latest Pantheon Greeter, Wingpanel, Indicator Icons, etc...)

PS when using the above Staging PPA, the WiFi on/off button isn't working on the Wingpanel indicator icon and the Switchboard Network plug. One have to manually turn on WiFi in terminal:
~$ nmcli nm wifi on
other commands if one gets stuck:
~$ sudo restart network-manager
~$ killall wingpanel
~$ gnome-session-quit --no-prompt

wise words
Dude, if you don't know how to use the Terminal, don't use the Terminal. It's dangerous and you'll break things. Just use the damn GUI like a normal person. It doesn't make you l337 to hose your system by copying and pasting crap from the Internet.

Please help us defend our trademark from Groupon and support GNOME!

"GNOME" the trademark has been a familiar name for the past 17 years in the Free and Open Source Software community. The GNOME project has been a staple desktop for GNU/Linux and BSD desktops. It was the default desktop for Sun Microsystems workstation class machines, continues to be the default desktop for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server distributions, and it is the default desktop of Fedora and Debian. SUSE Linux Enterprise Point of Service solution for the retail industry is based on GNOME. GNOME technology can be found in TVs, tablets, phones, consumer devices, and in common software everywhere.

Recently Groupon announced a product with the same product name as GNOME. Groupon’s product is a tablet based point of sale “operating system for merchants to run their entire operation." The GNOME community was shocked that Groupon would use our mark for a product so closely related to the GNOME desktop and technology. It was almost inconceivable to us that Groupon, with over $2.5 billion in annual revenue, a full legal team and a huge engineering staff would not have heard of the GNOME project, found our trademark registration using a casual search, or even found our website, but we nevertheless got in touch with them and asked them to pick another name. Not only did Groupon refuse, but it has now filed even more trademark applications (the full list of applications they filed is available on our groupon page linked). To use the GNOME name for a proprietary software product that is antithetical to the fundamental ideas of the GNOME community, the free software community and the GNU project is outrageous. Please help us fight this huge company as they try to trade on our goodwill and hard earned reputation.

We want to show that our brand matters and that you care. Of the 28 trademark applications Groupon filed, we have to file formal proceedings to oppose 10 of them by December 3, 2014. Help us raise the funds to fight back and most of all call public attention to this terrible behavior by Groupon. Help us make sure that when people hear about GNOME software they learn about freedom and not proprietary software. Our counsel has advised us that we will need $80,000 to oppose the registration of the first set of 10 applications. If we are able to defend the mark without spending this amount, we will use the remaining funds to bolster and improve GNOME. Please help us raise the money to protect GNOME's trademark and strengthen Free Software!
